    windows defender

What is the general feeling about windows defender? Is it a good program to install and use. I am using XP HOME.

    Re: windows defender

I have Windows Defender but I currently only let it scan my hard disk once a week (scheduled to run automatically during the night), as an addition to the other security programs I have.
I don't use the real-time protection component any more since I got the impression that it slowed down performance and since my anti-virus program provides real-time protection against viruses, spyware, rootkits etc.
The program performs its functions unobtrusively and there are frequent definition updates (two or three times per week).

I use it on several XP Pro systems. Unlike Hans, I do run the real-time protection component and haven't noticed any performance issues. I'd recommend the product as it is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> and seems to do a reasonable job. Part of the decision to run the real-time scanning should be the relative performance of your PC already. You can try it and change the operational settings any time.

NOTE: if you are already running an anti-spyware product with real-time scanning that you are happy with I'd recommend you NOT run the real-time protection. I'd still run the occasional scan - weekly, or bi-weekly.
