Availability indicator in calendar (2003 (SP2))

In my Outlook calendar, I create some appointments as Busy, some as Out of office, some as Tentative and some as Free. Beside each of those options when I create the appointment, there is a little coloured square (Blue, Purple, Striped or Clear). My understanding from the Help is that these should be reflected in the appearance of items in the calendar, but in fact everything appears clear.

Have I misunderatood what it is meant to look like, or is there some setting I've missed?

Do you mean that you don't have the little coloured bars on the left hand side of appointments? (see screenshots below)

When I look at it on that view, yes I do. I generally use the 31 day view, and imagined that the appointments would appear colour coded in there. Perhaps I was wrong?

The colout coding also used to update free busy time for those on Exchange, so they can see, for exaample, who has accepted, has tentatively accepted, or is busy at thet time.

I only see the coloured bars in the 1-day and 5-day (workweek) view, not in the 7-day and 31-day views, nor in the list-type views.

That must mean that I was mistaken in my expectation of how the colours worked, then.

Never mind - it's not a vital issue! I just wondered.

When you create an appointment if you select a label (or assign it after you create it) that color will follow through all the views.

    OK - that's quite useful.
