    numbering invoices (Word 2000)

Hi all. Can anyone tell me how to create a template that automatically numbers each document sequentially? I am creating gift certificates that I will issue as needed over the next 6 months. I want to have each one open with the next number already filled in. That way, I won't have to keep looking back at the previous certificate to find out what number it was so I can continue in the series. I hope I've made myself clear. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out Word's features but this one defeats me.

    Thanks for any help.

Ruth I do this for invoices, using a mail merge to store the information for the invoice. Using the Merge Record # field does exactly what you want. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

Given the cavetas from the article Charles mentioned, I'd save the current number within the template, either in a data module or in a custom document property.

Piece of code to spew out a new document access the variable, increments it, stores it back, saves the template, then creates the new document using the updated number.

Be sensitive about updating the number first, that wauy if your system crashes you won't be issuing duplicate numbers.
