    Kaspersky or Avast?

I am a reasonably happy user of Avast! free edition, but I notice that my bank has a deal with Kaspersky under which users of their online banking service can get Kaspersky Internet Security suite 2009 free. As one is free and the other is (usually) paid for, I haven't seen too many comparisons of the two.

Does anyone want to particularly recommend Kaspersky, or warn me off it?

I have no experience of using the Internet suite, but the anti-virus element I have high regard for - see <post:=675,083>post 675,083</post:>.

Here's one review from January that says their AV is the best: Antivirus Software Reviews, Best Antivirus Software Program. Be careful to note however that the review says that users have more "software conflicts" than elsewhere. Hard to decide.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

Thanks. That prompted me to Google on conflicts with Kaspersky, and I'm not sure that any of the alleged conflicts involve programs I use. If I got the suite, I would be using its firewall, and not say Comodo or ZoneAlarm. I use Adaware and Windows Defender, but not Spypot S & D. Some have suggested a conflict with Avast!, but I'd have no intention of trying to run both, of course.

The search also led me to a useful review by a happy customer here.

It is a free offer, so I suppose I lose nothing by trying it.

It's a "gift horse" so you're right not to try looking in his mouth. <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15> Good luck and keep us posted.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

Well, I'm trying it. I wonder whether it is causing some slowdown of loading of images in Opera, which I use as my browser. Googling leads to a number of reports of that, although they suggest that with the latest versions of Opera and of Kaspersky it should be OK.

Also there are some things that Kaspersky does that other software also does. Both Kaspersky and Opera have anti-phishing facilities. And both Kaspersky and Outlook have anti-spam facilities. Maybe they work against each other. I had to import my Outlook safe senders list into Kaspersky to stop it identifying some regular mailshots I subscirbe to as spam.

So I'll try it for a bit longer, but the jury is still out.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

I have used Kaspersky Anti Virus for nearly 12 months. Seems to do the job very well, questions are answered promptly by their technical people. But I can't use SpywellBlaster because of 'collisions' which is a pity.
I will be renewing my licence with them.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

Thanks. I wasn't really unhappy with Avast!, but as I had the opportunity for a free of Kaspersky for free, I thought I'd try it. I'll see how it goes for a bit longer, but I can always go back to my old set-up.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

What I'm trying is the Kaspersky Internet Secuirty suite, not just the anti-virus. I wonder if it has more "collisions" than just the anti-virus.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

All of the Internet Security suites include extra features on top of basic antivirus, antispyware, and firewall. These can include ad and popup blocking, content filtering, and more. If there are features you don't need, you could turn them off and see whether that improves performance.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

I've tried a bit of that and haven't yet identified which features in particular cause the problem. If I don't get it sorted out soon I'll just go back to the previous set-up. I don't have to use Kaspersky, and if if won't place nice with my favourite browser I may ditch it.

You said to keep you posted - I've uninstalled Kaspersky and gone back to Avast!

I figured that would happen when you said that it wouldn't play well with Opera. Hope it was at least "informational" if not fun.

    Re: Kaspersky or Avast?

Yes it was informational. I wasn't that keen on the program for a number of other reasons too. From time to time it put up messages that I wasn't quite sure what to do with. Not quite as clear as say ZoneALarm, I thought.
