Login Password Required (XP Home Edition)

I restarted my computer and got a login requirement (username and password) for the first time. The default username was one of the two profiles that I had on the computer, but a password was never set.

Is there a way of getting around this password requirement? I can either set it to Shut Down, Restart, Hibernate or Stand By.

Re: Login Password Required (XP Home Edition)

Hans,
Perhaps I am misunderstanding the post, but the instructions all say click on Start, then Run, then....

I start my computer, and have a 'Log On to Windows' window with one of the User Names displayed and an empty Password field. I don't know the password and neither does the other user. How would I get passed this window password request so that I can click Start, then Run, then...

Reading some articles revealed the following suggestions:
1 - install a parallel operating system on a different partition on the same computer, then use a trick to gain access to the old system. This seems rather complex, but I might be able to manage if other articles splell things out well enough
2 - 3rd party freeward tools that enable reseting the lost password and logon with a blank password. Any recommendations of trusted sources?

My computer has never asked for a password in the past. What gives now?

Any suggestions. The least intrusive method that doesn't blow up my computer is what I am hoping for.

If you have never set a password, chances are that you can get into Windows by selecting a user and leaving the password box empty. Have you tried that?

Re: Login Password Required (XP Home Edition)

Hans,
I cannot "select a user" via drop down. Leaving the password box empty does nothing but prompt a reboot leaving me back where I started. When clicking OK with a blank password box I am getting the Dr. Watson drwtsn32.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c9ef7a6" referenced memory at "0x7c9ef7a6". The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of "0xc0000015".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

I click OK and a reboot occurs. Back to square one. Microsoft support search is coming up empty so far.

I appreciate the time and help.

That sounds serious. I hope that a Windows expert will have a suggestion for you.

Take a look at this article about a little known access hole in Windows XP. You will need your Windows XP CD to open this hole.

Doc Watson,
Thanks. I came across this same article in my search. I'm always looking for a third party recommendation before jumping in the deep end though. I'll give it a swing and report back on my success. Cross your fingers.

Re: Login Password Required (XP Home Edition)

I could not boot in safe mode.

Steps 1 through 11 worked exactly as advertised; however, I was unable to initiate step 12. While I did gain graphical access to the User Accounts window, it immediately had a User Account message window stating ' The current user account is not recognized. Restart the computer and then open User Accounts.

I continued with the repair and registered my system withou having to enter my product key. That took almost a half hour.

Windows finally booted up with my two original user accounts to select from.

Everything looks kosher!

Thanks Doc Watson and a thousand blessings upon Woody's!!!!!

That's great news Amy !!! Glad it worked out for you.

Now.... have you created a Password Reset Disk ???? The instructions are in that same article I linked to. You really should make one, just in case this problem reoccurs.

Re: Login Password Required (XP Home Edition)

I haven't created a Password Rest Disk as yet because another problem has been encountered. New post to follow under Internet Explorer.

Thank you for that reminder though.
