Hyperlinks and Multiple Drive letters (2003)

Hi all! Recently "inherited" a project involving a Excel worksheet with multiple hyperlinks to other Excel worksheets (which in turn link to hundreds of pdf files). When completed, I hope to be able to install on a network drive, DVD, and Hard Drive. For the "working" copy I'm saving to a thumb drive. At work, the thumb drive is the "E" drive. If I use on a different system, the drive designation may change, and none of the links work. Any way I can hyperlink to the files, and not go through the drive letters?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

If the other workbooks linked to are in the same folder as the workbook itself, the links should still work if you move them all to a different folder or drive.

    Hi Hans
If the complete package is on one drive, is it not possible to use relative file location to hyperlink?
    Regards
    Don

You can set the Hyperlink Base property of a workbook (in File | Properties). Hyperlinks will be relative to that path. So you'd only have to change the Hyperlink Base property.

OK, discovered that the links were not to Excel worksheets- didn't notice that the sheets were saved as mhtml (oh, the joys of dealing with other peoples work). Suspect I know why he saved it that way, but that doesn't help me right now. Should it still work as long as the links are in the same folder, a.e E:/pubs ??

If the file containing the links is an Excel workbook, the replies higher up in this thread should still be valid.

Suggest that you read the Excel Help file entitled, "Set the base address for the hyperlinks in a workbook".

Hmmm, still not working the way I want it to- am I thinking correctly that I will need to change the base address in every link for each drive letter?

BTW, I want to thank y'all for your patience with this- I'm a helicopter mechanic, not a Excel expert (duh)!

Does your Excel workbook contain links to files on different drives?

Han's - yes, it has links to another network drive (still haven't figured that one out yet- should have access to that drive)

Links to another network drive shouldn't be a problem - they should remain the same when the workbook is moved. So i'm not sure what the problem is.

Well, , I finally solved the problem ( I suppose the hard way!). I decided to dump the kludge that my predecessor had started, and started from scratch. So far, seems to be working like it should- only have about 750 links to go......
