annoying hard disk error (Vista SP1)

Garbette got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and is very dilligent about downloading all the updates. A few days ago, she got a message which read that there was a hard drive error and that the hard drive needed to be "repaired or replaced." We went through all the steps (defrag, checkdisk, cleanup) and also had a diagnostic run at the place we bought the laptop (nothing, nada, zip). There is no disk error. Just the annoying message.

I don't know if this is a software issue or a hardware issue(in which case I'm posting in the wrong place, sorry), but definitely something's amiss.

    Any suggestions?

What chkdsk options did you select? Did you look in the event log after chkdsk was run? When does the message popup (i.e boot time only, after some period of use, a particular program is loaded)? Have you run malware scans?

    Joe,

We ran the chkdsk that caused us to have to reboot the laptop in order for it to run. No errors, no error message log. No error log after the message comes up. No error log after a few hours.

The message pops up when the laptop starts up, then since we don't want to select the option to never tell us when the hard drive is really damaged, it pops up every so often in the usual naggy MS way.

We have run a virus scan - nothing. Garbette cannot currently get onto the internet unless we go to our favorite coffee place, and then we only download Windows update and anti-virus software updates(I sit with her - I should know). Garbette claims the first time the message appeared was when she was playing solitaire and listing to her tunes.

When we searched for the specific error message connected with this pop-up, we got varying degrees of "don't worry about it" to "trash the hard drive and start over." We've only had the laptop about 3 glorious months.

    Does this help?

I think her machine has been "Hi Jacked" by some down load which could include a iPod download.

Find "Hijack This" http://www.merijn.org/programs.php,install it and submit it to be trouble shot.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Peggy,
If the laptop is only three months old, shouldn't it have a warranty?
Did you purchase it locally or where you can return it to be repaired. usually without cost?

What is the exact error message and or error number?
Did you hit F8 on boot up to get into the advanced mode and try the last good configuration?
    Try Safe Mode?

    Dave,

Yeah, I saw an article on mp3 worms. Situation however, is.....Garbette gets her music from family cds or her mp3 player. We use a music download service for the mp3 player which resides on my p.c. which runs on XP.

I'll check the link you provided when I get home. Thanks!

Yes, thankfully we're on warranty and we took it into the store and they ran some diagnostics but found nothing. We've had it sent back to the manufacturer once for another problem over a month ago, when it did the blue screen o'death because of a hardware situation( <post#=716,225>post 716,225</post#> ), not connected with the hard drive.

I wish it was a repairable situation, really I do. The error message is 0X807002. Looking up this error message brought up many comments and suggestions that we did try to no avail. All it did point to was a software glitch, and the guy at the store concurred.

We also went into safe mode and the message still showed up. Not being a Vista person, I guess I can try the advanced mode and get the last good configuration. I'll let you know.

    Thanks everyone!

Try using the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> AutoRuns for Windows. It will show you everything that starts when your system boots. If you aren't sure of what you see post a screen shot of the LOGON tab.

You also ought to run Ad-Aware 2008 Free - Lavasoft and Spybot - Search & Destroy. They both scan for malware other than viruses. Because of their internal architecture often they come up with different results. Not that they are wrong or one is better than the other. Just different. Running multiple products for this type of scan is a better way regardless of free or paid.

    Joe,

We have Spybot and they didn't find anything.....We'll try the Ad-Aware (used to have it on my p.c. but it didn't play nice).

    Thanks!

Re: annoying hard disk error (Vista SP1)

Garbette got back home and we were able to resolve some things. I did show her how to go back to a previous configuration, but we can't tell if some of the problems she's having (now it's game related), are due to the fact that she installed something from Gamespot and then, instead of uninstalling it, she dragged the folder to the (you guessed it!) trash and then emptied it. Ditto for a few non-functioning games. I did a regedit (thankfully, still there), just to show her why it's bad to drag and drop, and this weekend, we'll work on it again.

Thanks for everyone's help! I'm going to the hardware section now because her dvd drive doesn't want to play nice.
