Embedded Presentation object (Excel 2003)

Hi,

I am trying to embed a MS Powerpoint presentation as an OLE object within my spreadsheet, so that I can activate the presentation by pressing a button. I embed the presentation via the Insert->Object... menu option. The problem seems to be that only the first slide is embedded and when the presentation is opened, the title bar says "Slide in xyz". I can't seem to get the whole presentation to be embedded.
Help!

cheers
Dominic

Re: Embedded Presentation object (Excel 2003)

Hi Dominic,

I just tried the same thing with Excel 2000, via Insert|Object|Create from file|Browse, selecting a pps file, then Insert|Display as Icon|OK. Everything worked fine - double-clicking the object opens it and clicking each slide takes me to the next.

Have you tried running 'Detect & Repair' from the Excel help menu?
Cheers,

Re: Embedded Presentation object (Excel 2003)

I'd create a presentation in PowerPoint and save it to disk.
In Excel:
- Select Insert | Object...
- Activate the Create from File tab.
- Click Browse...
- Select the saved PowerPoint presentation and click Insert.
- If you want to create a link to the saved version, tick the check box "Link to file".
- If you only want to see an icon on the worksheet, tick the check box "Display as icon".

Aternatively, insert a hyperlink to the saved presentation (Insert | Hyperlink...)

Hi Paul,

thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I get the same problem repeatedly, regardless of the spreadsheet and regardless of the powerpoint presentation. I will try the Detect and Repair help option, but it's all getting a bit frustrating :-)

cheers

I think Dominic used the Create New tab and selected Microsoft PowerPoint Slide instead of Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation. You then get only one slide, and when editing it, the Insert | New Slide menu option is disabled.

Re: Embedded Presentation object (Excel 2003)

Hi Hans,

thanks for the reply. What you describe is exactly what i did in the first place, but when I open the presentation by double-clicking (or activating from VB) the object, I only get one slide (the first one). The title bar in MS Powerpoint says "Slide in [spreadsheet name]" indicating that powerpoint knows it is only displaying a single slide. I wasn't selecting an object type - I was creating an object from a file. Just to make it more complicated for you/us.

thoughts?

cheers
Dominic

Re: Embedded Presentation object (Excel 2003)

Interestingly if I try to insert a new object by selecting the "Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation" from the Create New tab, I get an error saying (helpfully) "Cannot Insert Object".

That could explain a few things!

NOw I just have to find out why I can't insert a presentation object. I have tried the "Detect and Repair" help option which I guess checks the installation. Doesn't help unfortunately. :-(

It should say "Presentation in [spreadsheet name]" instead of "Slide in [spreadsheet name]" - see screenshot below.

I don't know why you only get a single slide. Try inserting a hyperlink to the presentation instead.

Try the following:

Quit Excel.
In Windows, select Start | Run...
Type
regsvr32 ole32.dll

Press Enter or click OK.
Start Excel, and try to create a new PowerPoint presentation object.
