Organize is Grayed Out (Outlook 2003)

Why would my Tools / Organize be grayed out?

    Regards,

Does this happen in all folders? Organize is disabled for web mail folders (e.g. Hotmail).

    Hans:

Yes, it's disabled there as well.

If Tools | Organize is disabled wherever you are in Outlook, it may be time to create a new e-mail profile. Or if that doesn't work, to reinstall Outlook.

    Hans:

    Well, he--...

    I created a new profile...no help.

    I ran a repair on Outlook...nada.

And this is all with services and startup programs disabled.

Am I going to have to remove and re-install Office??

Have you 'tweaked' anything lately? Have you run any system cleaners or optimizers?

No...I don't "tweak" things! Seriously, not that I'm aware of, no. Yesa I have run registry a cleaner. But wouldn't running a repair on Office "fix" that?

Whatever may be the cause, we probably won't discover it. I'd reinstall Outlook as the next step.

I fear so, yes. Otherwise it would be the same as a repair installation, and you've already tried that without success.

You could also decide to live without the Organize option (I never use it myself), but that's up to you to decide...

Re: Organize is Grayed Out (Outlook 2003)

    Hans:

    I found it:

I uninstalled Outlook -- totally -- and that did nothing.

After I backed up everything, I went back to a pre-outlook image. Then I installed Outlook...the Organize worked.

Long story short, when I brought over my other files I found the problem was my outcmd.dat file, 'cause as soon as I brought that over, the Organize was gone again.

Obviously I ne3ed to back that file up. Assuming tough there were a problem in the future, is there a way to reset that file without restoring?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Re: Organize is Grayed Out (Outlook 2003)

outcmd.dat stores toolbar and menu customizations, so yes, that was a logical thing to be the problem. Usually when it is corrupted the problems are more severe, so that probably explains why no one mentioned it specifically in this case. And usually when you create a new Outlook profile you get a factory default outcmd.dat, so had the new profile worked, it would have pointed in that direction. (Perhaps you populated your clean profile with the problem files from your old profile before testing it??)

Anyway, it's a good idea to back up that file if you create your own icons in the little button face editor, since they are not stored anywhere else (as far as I know). Otherwise, you can simply delete it and Outlook will display the default menus and toolbars.
