Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

I have a new Dell Vostro desktop and I have installed several printers, and I have specified my Brother HL 1430 as the default printer. However, the system declines to retain this setting, so every time I want to print something with the Brother I have to reset the default- which is tedious to say the least!

Can you help me with a solution please.

How many printers do you have installed?
Does it reset to any particular printer at startup?
If so, is it the last default printer you used to have set?
Do you have any printer 'toolboxes' - e.g. the type that are installed and run at startup, monitoring the printer status?

Not ideal, but you could use a utility such as SetDefaultPrinter.

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

Thanks Leif for the rapid response :

10 printers installed! Too many but onl two used regularly.
Resets to last printer on list on start up (Winfax)
No - Brother was set before re-boot
    No printer tool boxes installed

At initial stage of boot up I was able to check that Brother was still the default, but by the time the whole boot sequence was completed no printer was marked as default.

Over to you - hope this helps!

You are not alone - see <post:=694,316>post 694,316</post:> and replies. Interesting that it was a Brother too...

I'm not sure what causes this, but a few things:
Is it a local (USB) printer?
If so, is it still plugged in to the same USB port as when it was installed?
Is the printer powered up when you boot up? If not, does it make any difference if it is?

Run msconfig, and under the Startup tab:
Is anything set to run for Winfax?
If so, temporarily disable it and see if it makes a difference.
Are there any other references to what might be printer setups set to run at startup?

Do you still have your previous default printer connected?
If not, have you deleted it?

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

    Dear leif,
USB connection, not changed since installation on new PC a week or so ago
Yes - powered up at start up - I have not tried changing this

    MSCONFIG
Two entries for Winfax both disabled fotr test
    Several Brother entries on list
All printers currently installed on new PC a week ago - old PC has no printer connected now.

    BOOT UP
Brother showed as default at initial stage of boot up, but I watched the printer settings through the rest of the start up sequence and saw that the default setting was deleted at the last stage when BVRP Connection Manager came up - but I'm not sure if this was the only process going on.

It would seem that the Winfax boot is not a factor in this.

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

So, in summary: New PC, all drivers up to date(?), no old, deleted printers.
Does setting another printer as default stick?

You could try running AutoRuns for Windows and see if that helps pinpoint the culprit.

Im familiar with BVRP as I used to use it.....its a programme for phone tools e.g. answer phone and send fax ( not windows xp fax machine), which would associate itself with a printer, so I would check that your "fax" programme isn't in starting up.

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

    Dear leif,
You are correct - as per your first line.. For your information I only have two external printers connected by USB, the rest are internal fax and pdf printers.

I have confirmed that BVRP is the culprit by disabling all start up programs with MSCONFIG and with the Brother set as default, on re-boot up the printers folder shows the Brother as the default, but on manually starting up the BVRP, the default is removed - I saw it with my own eyes! If I then reinstate the Brother as the default, it gets on quite happily with BVRP running.

The command that BVRP invokes is a communications start file which applies the network profile settings for my ISP and network, and this is the killer. I found this via your suggestion of using Autoruns by the way.

Do you have any suggestions about how to sequence the boot up of BVRP to be deferred, or to be able to have an automatic set up for the Brother to reinstate the default status after the whole starup is completed - which would probably be the simpler way to fix the problem.

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

    Dave,

I only have two real printers, both connected by USB. I think that I have found the culprit, which is BVRP, my communications manager. This kills the default setting on the Brother when it cranks up, but I am still to find a way to deal with this conflict.

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

I think you need to find a way within BVRP to set the (default) printer - prevention being better than cure! Perhaps their support team can give an answer - I had a quick look on their support pages but there was nothing much to help.

Which did you install first - the Brother or BVRP?
Does setting the Brother to be shareable make any difference?

Re: Default Printer Setting (XP + SP2)

    Leif,
I have found a work around for the BVRP problem. I have removed BVRP from the start up list, which allows the boot sequence to complete (and makes the ISP connection). I can then start up the BVRP when I want to change settings or monitor the connection without disabling the default setting for the Brother.

Thank you very much for your advice on this problem - much appreciated I assure you.

    Best regards

    DAVID MILLS
