Losing Comments after Saving (Excel 2007)

I have a client who reports that they save comments in a shared (yes, I know that's a problem in itself) Excel workbook, but when they reopen the file the next day, the comments are no longer there. I think the following points might be relevant:

    - The workbook is stored in Excel 2003-compatible format
    - It is password-protected, and only two Excel 2007 users are able to open it in read-write mode
    - All other users, some of whom have Excel 2003, open the file in read-only mode
    - Because of earlier problems with consistency of views, there are two short VBA procedures to save and recall the latest view, which seem to be working OK
    - The problem with the comments only seems to occur after the system has been shut down completely - not when the file itself is closed and re-opened by the same or other users during the day; this is similar to the problem with the views, which held until the system was shut down at night, but were lost after starting up the next day

I'm not sure that I can write an equivalent VBA procedure to overcome the comment-saving problem - I can sort of accept that views get lost, but with this latest problem they are using the save command and other users are seeing the saved comment until the next day, so I can't figure out what I would do differently with a bit of code!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

What happens if you unshare the workbook? You could experiment with an unshared copy of the workbook.

I'm going in there tomorrow to try it, but I suspect that unsharing will get rid of the problem; unfortunately, I have already canvassed the possibility of permanently unsharing the workbook, and we just can't find a way to avoid sharing altogether. The read-write password with view-saving procedure was the best compromose we could reach.

Perhaps I need to create a procedure by which they unshare the workbook at the end of the day, and re-share it when they open it for the first time the next morning.

    Hi Alison,

I don't think sharing has anything to do with the problem - I've had the same experience with Excel 2000 workbooks opened in Excel 2007 and saved in 97-2003 compatability mode that have never been shared.
    Cheers,
