Updates install on shutdown (XP Pro and MCE SP2)

I have Windows Update set to Download, Let me choose when. On both machines Windows installs pending updates at Shutdown. Shouldn't it be asking me yes or no, before it installs? It is possible that I missed that choice by looking away from my PCs while they are shutting down. Would it then default to Install after a timeout?
Have done a search on Updates but did not find a thread that addressed this issue.

I'd suggest that you change the setting for your updates to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.". That will eliminate the issue. If they are not on your system when you shut down there is no way they can install on shutdown.

Windows does ask you to install updates during the shutdown procedure.

If you did not see the option "Shutdown" (without installing updates), most likely, you are using Welcome screen logon.
To see more options, try to press and hold Shift key when you click Start > Shut Down, but it may not work (I didn't tested it).
To disable Welcome screen, click Start > Control Panel, then select User Accounts, and click on "Change the way users log on or off". On the next screen, uncheck "Use the Welcome screen" checkbox and click Apply Options. Now during shutdown you can select "Shutdown" from drop-down list instead of "Install updates and shutdown".

    Repl to all

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try "Notify me, but don't download". That seems to be the cleanest way.

If you could post back in a week or so, after the August patches come out, and let us know if it made a difference it would be much appreciated. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Repl to all

The August patches came out and I did get the option to shut down without installing. I think I may have missed the message the last time, and then it timed out. When I came back to the computer it was installing the updates. This time I paid more attention during the shut down process and I saw the message. Sometimes multitasking can get you in trouble!
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Re: Repl to all

Did you change your settings to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them." ?? What you are describing shouldn't happen if your settings were changed. There shouldn't be any updates to install unless you manually downloaded, or allowed the system to download the updates. That setting prevents this unless you manually accept all or some of the updates.

    Re: Repl to all

Sorry I didn't make this clear. I changed nothing in the settings. I just observed the shut down more carefully this time and found that the option to install or reject the downloads was indeed present. Apparently the default is to install, and if you don't reply in ?? seconds it will install. I must have looked away from my computer for a long enough period to allow the default install. Hence my comment on multitasking.
