Icons associated with Office docs (All)

How do microsoft docs display the associated icon for
the application? Doc created in Office 97 will be given a
specific icon but when opened and edited on workstation
with Office 2000 the doc displays a different icon. When
back on the original workstation same doc has Office 97
icon. Is there a path to the application EXE and a default
    icon displayed accordingly?
    Thanks,
    Colin

Colin, the program files contain a number of icons, one of which is the default. Right click on any shortcut and select properties. From there click Change Icon, and browse. If you fiind the file Winword (usually crogram filesMicrosoft officeoffice) for example it will show all of the icons available. If you are just playing remember to click Cancel now or you might accidently change an icon!! <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

To change the icons that display with the file in Windows Explorer and elsewhere, you use the File Types dialog under Folder Options (see attached). I think you can use any arbitrary icon you like, but by default it shows the icons saved in the winword.exe file. This changed between 97 and 2000.

Thanks for that useful information but how does a document know how to display the default icon on attachments etc. Does each document have a link to find the default within Winword.exe or excel.exe?

No. When Windows needs to display the Icon, it looks up the program associated with the file type and uses the default Icon (ordinal number zero I think) in that program file. That's why the Icon changes for the same file on different systems.
