USB Port [rant]

On the wife's NEW HP Vista desktop (Sony has stopped making desktops) the key board and mouse that comes with it stink. With all of the "Extras" the sleep button is right when most of us "Rests" the left "Pinkie" and with keep putting the machine to sleep. Then the act of hitting the the key again SHOULD wake it up, but does NOT. So we took her old Sony Keyboard which has a USP plug and attached a Purple converter adapter so we could use the standard keyboard socket. But the keyboard or Mouse will NOT work with a adapter.
So, now that there are 2 ports on the front and 4 on the back, all four are used up before one even before one get all of their hardware connected.

She has tried Mouse, Keyboard, Printer, Scanner, and needs to add her PDA, Camera (when needed) and no place for her external drive.

So, we found a old mouse, that uses the standard Green socket, and the External drive is plugged in the back.

In todays world I can that a standard desktop needs to come with at LEAST 12 USB connections, so one does NOT have to use the external hubs, which will NOT always work with ALL devices. Good thing that we are NOT into iPods and the like.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Well, I don't know about your statement that USB hubs don't always work with all devices, but I CAN agree that you should NEVER use a non-powered USB hub! My Dell has more in-machine ports than her machine, but I still needed a hub. I bought a D-Link 7-port and have never had a problem.

I don't know if you or your wife ever use the Sleep ability of the Operating System. If you don't, couldn't you disable that function to at least make the keyboard better?

I'm also trying to figure out where you rest your left pinkie! I keep mine over the 'a' on the home row, or scratching my chin with the other fingers on my left hand .

I use a Microsoft Natural keyboard (hate those straight flat things) and just got a new one in February. It comes with a PS2 cable and a USB adapter and works on either.

Yes, sleep was disabled for the software, but the HARDWARE switch can NOT be disabled as far as I could find.

I am a "Seek and Destroy" typist (two fingered) and the wife is a super speed typist.

And this "Sleep" button is even a little higher that the normal keys, so if you slide the left had to the side of the keyboard you will hit the button.
