    Service Pack 3

Hi Friends. (1) When I boot up my computer there is a prompt in the Sys Tray informing me of an available update from Microsoft which is in fact SP3. Is it expedient to download and install this update and (2) In the "Windows Secrets" newsletter there is piece about Reg Mech [see attachment] is it prudent to run this free scan or should it be avoided. Also, is this in any way connected with CCleaner as the logo looks familiar? Thank You S Fox.

    1) I and several other Loungers such as StuartR and JoePerez have installed Windows XP SP3 on several PCs without problems, so go ahead and install it. If a problem arises, you can always uninstall it through the Add or Remove Programs control panel.

    2) As the word ADS above the icon in your screenshot shows, it is an advertisement, not an editorial article, so Registry Mechanic is not necessarily endorsed by the staff of Windows Secrets.
Reg Mech is not associated with CCleaner. The makers of that program, Piriform, have 3 applications at the moment: CCleaner, Recuva and Defraggler.
If you already use CCleaner there doesn't seem to be an urgent need for Registry Mechanic.

Many thanks Hans for your advice, I may download SP3 after setting a restore date...and as for the second matter I will content myself with the CCleaner prog I have on HD. Regards S Fox.

    Re: Service Pack 3

I'd recommend that you download Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers and burn it to a CD. Don't be put off by the name. It is just the full set of all the fixes for SP-3. If you use Windows Update it only downloads the pieces you need at the time. If you ever have to resintall it or install it on another machine you'll appreciate already having the full version.

Also, remember that the first rule of service packs is make a backup of your system BEFORE you try to install a service pack.

(Edited by HansV to make web address clickable - I just added <!t> before and <!t> after it)

Hello Joe. Thanks for the additional advice to that made by Hans, perhaps I can further add some information I have just received from a friend who also happens to be a member of Woody's Lounge which is how we became acquainted. There seems to be some important steps to follow before downloading SP3. according to this Microsoft Help & Support page. < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 > Regards S Fox
