    Auto Magnify?? (OUtlook 2007)

Is it my imagination, or is Outlook magnifying/enlarging the fonts fonts when I reply to a message? What controls this?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

In Outlook 2003, the program usually uses your settings for fonts when you reply, but sometimes uses the settings in the sender's stationery. I haven't figured out the pattern.

    Jefferson:

but in 2007, it's going off on it's own...

I have it set to "Use my fonts when replying and forwarding." I have my "reply font set at 11pt.

So if you send me an e-mail in 8 point say, and I go to reply to it, it will enlarge you part of the message to 11 point as well...

I haven't been able to figure whether that is "just visual", or whether you would actually receive the message with an enlarged font.

    Very strange...

    Regards,
    Chuck

Oh, I was thinking of the opposite scenario. Can you test it by sending to a webmail account?

From your description it seems as though Outlook is doing what you told it. What is the behavior that is confusing? What happens when you just open the message?

    Joe / Jefferson:

    Joe:

I suppose you are right. The enlarged text is only in my view during "reply" but not actually part of the replay font setting.

Below is a shot. The one on the left is an opened e-mail. The one on the right is the same e-mail during a reply session.

I'm (really) not complaining, since my eyes are less than perfect. I just wanted to know if the receiver was getting it enlarged or if it was just an "accommodation" by Outlook for such as me.

Wonder what does that and if it's "controllable"? I saw nothing in the help about it...

    Chuck

The addressee wil receive the e-mail in the font & size in which it was composed. So, if you compose the reply in 11 point Segoe that is what the addressee will see regardless of the original font/size that you received the e-mail.

    Joe:

So if the original is 8pt Arial, and then my response is 11pt Segoe, that's what they stay, regardless of how they look -- even as I am composing?

That's good...but what causes the increased size? Is it controllable?

    Chuck

You caused the increase in size with your Outlook font settings.

Chuck, it is not your imagination. I noticed a like change in my Outlook 2007 a few months back.

When replying, the fonts are displayed in a higher magnification... both the reply comments and the original sender's note. When the message is sent, the proper fonts are used. Proof of that can be found by checking your Sent Mail folder where you will see the message with the desired fonts.

In various apps, like IE, you can magnify the display by clicking on the Ctrl key and using the wheel on the mouse to increase or decrease the view. It is almost like the incease feature has been attached to Outlook 2007 when replying... yet one cannot modify the viewing area via the Ctrl/wheel concept.

I have searched for an answer whenever I have spare time. If I come across the answer, I'll let you know.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

    Re: Auto Magnify?? (OUtlook 2007)

    Yippeee, found the solution !!!

    1. Open up any incoming message.
    2. Click on Reply.
    3. From the Main Menu Bar, select Format Text
    4. On the right side you will see a "Zoom" feature.Click (or double click) on the Zoom icon.
    5. You will see three predefined percentage radio buttons and a box where you can define your own value. Select the 100% radio button and click on OK.

You can back out of the message, without sending it. The change is permanent.

Mine was set at 120% and that is what caused the magnification. I never changed that value. Something, somewhere, somehow did it. It wasn't me... I swear!!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

My messages are now in normal mode.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

Thanks Bob. Although it is helpful, I would have thought they would say something!

I understand that I bombard these board (unintentionally I promise) when jumping into new software. The impulse here is especially so since this wasn't a "planned" move.

All that being said, this was one that I did (really, guys!) tried to find an answer for, but could not.

    Thanks again.

    Regards,
    Chuck
