download a file periodically....? (Office 2007)

When I installed Office 2007 it asked if I wanted to enable "download a file
periodically that helps determine system problems". Can anyone explain a bit
about this? Is it essentially an update to the Office Diagnostics program?
Any reason not to enable it?

    Thanks

See Diagnose and repair crashing Office programs by using Office Diagnostics. The download makes it possible to check whether you have the latest updates.

    OK thanks.

I see that I can enable this option at Options/trust center/privacy.

If someone is having a problem, but this option was not already checked, and I check it for them, how long do I need to wait til the update to Office Diagnostics is downloaded. Is there a way to update it immediately?

    Thanks

The article I referred to says "Wait about a week to allow the file to be downloaded, and then run Microsoft Office Diagnostics again."

You can always visit Microsoft Update to see if you've missed any updates, and download/install them immediately if you wish.

Re: download a file periodically....? (Office 2007)

    Greetings, Hans:
Is this kind of automatic update one of the things that is warned against by the Office Watch crew (Dunn, Woody himself, etc)? I am having problems with Excel 2007 hanging when I try to run certain simple VBA procs, and the Windows Diagnostics dialogue that I get always comes down to you-need-to-let-us-plant-a-file-in-your-PC.
Is it safe for the user?
    Thanks,

Woody etc. warn against automatically downloading and installing all Windows and Office updates - they recommend that you should decide which ones to install and when. The various diagnostics tools are different from those - they're not regular updates but troubleshooting tools. I see no harm in installing them.

Thanks very much. That is a relief.
