    New Virus??

I never know if these are genuine or just spam, but this came from the missus boss.......

Subject: Fwd: VERY IMPORTANT - BIG VIRUS COMING !!! PLEASE READ & FORWARD !!!

    http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

Hi All, I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus! I checked Snopes (URL above), and it is for real!! Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' a whole in the hard drive of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Boot Sector of the Hard Drive, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

    Re: New Virus??

The kind of message that urges you to send it on to all your acquantainces are a type of virus themself, whether it's about collecting tea-bag labels to battle cancer or about a new computer virus.

Any sensible computer user should know by now that you shouldn't open attachments or click links if you're not absolutely certain that you can trust them. I must have received hundreds of e-mails (all relegated directly to the junk mail folder) with postcards or links to e-cards from people claiming to be friends, relatives, admirers or lovers...

So to all Loungers: do *NOT* send on this message or similar ones.

I would never open links / attachments, though I was'nt <totally> sure of the actual message, but thank's for your expert clarification. I will pass that back up the chain.....

I might also recommend that you tell the "missus boss" about Snopes.com, and tell them that before they pass something on to copy the subject line of the email in question, go to Snopes and paste it into the serach box. That will tell you pretty quickly and reliably if something is real or not. But, as Hans said, the best policy is to toss anything that tells you to forward it to everyone you know into the rubbish bin !!!

Additionally, even though it is (should be?) largely of historical interest now, see the account of the seminal Gullibility Virus.
