    System will not RESTART

I am re-doing a GATEWAY Select 650 for a local Thrift Store which received it as a donation. I do this as a volunteer at the Thrift Store which supports the local Humane Society. The system will be sold once it is "fixed". I have all of the RECOVERY disks that came with it from Gateway. My problem is that once I get the system loaded with WIN 98 SE, the system will not "restart". It shuts down fine. But when it is supposed to restart after a hardware driver installation, for example, it just does not complete the restart. The monitor goes off and apparently goes to sleep but the tower continues to run. I have to hold down the power button to shut the system down and then turn in on again. This is not the SHUTDOWN problem that WIN 98 SE had. The system shuts down fine. But it will not do the RESTART. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like the monitor is setup to hibernate. Are there any controls on the monitor itself ??

Do you have another monitor available to connect temporarily ??

    Re: System will not RESTART

I do not think the problem is with the monitor. It is one that I use to "fix" all of the donated computers.

When the computer is told to restart, it starts to go through the process but just does not complete it. The desktop goes off and then the monitor puts up the "no signal" box and then the monitor power light changes from green to orange. But in the meantime, the tower simply continues to run. As I said, the system seems to start the restart process but gets so far and then can not complete it. So I hold down the power button until the tower shuts down - wait 5 seconds, push the power button and everything goes as it should.

You probably need to find all of the udpate to Win98 SE. Check out Download Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.1a - Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack contains all Windows 98 SE updates from WindowsUpdate site and more - Softpedia.

NOTE: the update is NOT from Microsoft. Use at your own risk.

    Re: System will not RESTART

OK, I guess I'm not understanding what "stage" of the install process you are at or is the installation of Windows 98 completed and now the system is balky when you attempt to install hardware & software or are the problems beginning during the install process and the repeated need to reboot the system during that process ???

You say, "The desktop goes off and then the monitor puts up the "no signal" box and then the monitor power light changes from green to orange. But in the meantime, the tower simply continues to run.". What are you referring to when you say "the desktop goes off" ?? The desktop view on the monitor ??? If that is the case, then it might be something in the Bios settings. Have you checked them ??? Are you getting the "Windows did not shut down correctly...." error when you reboot ??

    Re: System will not RESTART

WOW - now the entire system crashed and I can not get it to do anything. Now I will dismantle the system and put the various parts out for sale at the Thrift Store. Everything else will be properly recycled. Thanks for your help.
