    CD-Roms Disappeared

I have two CD-ROM Drives, one is a Samsung SC-148C the other is a HP CD-Writer+300, Both drive letters have disappeared from Device Manager and My Computer. The HP Drive has a yellow exclamation point in Device Mgr and the Samsun doesn't show up at all.

When I right-clicked on the Samsun and selected properties, the following message appeared: A driver (services) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this Functionality. (Code 32). Click troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

I tried to roll back the driver but another message came up that said "No driver files have been backed up for this device." I then went to Services and selected automatic and started the "IMAPI CD-Burning Services to no avail.

I need to install a program via the CD-ROM as soon as I possibly can.

I need help getting my drives up and running again and I will appreciate any suggestions.

    Hi Gloria,

Does either drive actually work (eg do the activity lights come on when you switch the PC on)? What happens if you put an audio CD in the drive (you should be able to hear music though headphones connect to the output jack, at least, and the activity light should flicker)?

    Hi Paul,

Neither actually work, but the lights on the Samsun blink for about 10 seconds then go out.
Lights on the HP blink for the same amount of time, then remain lit and steady.

I had a CD in the drives and that is what transpires. They are both unusable for listening or any other activity.

You HAVE installed or uninstalled some program (or updated one) that took over your device drivers for these CD Drives.
You need to figure out what you did and check with OEM, as they should have a fix for you.

Roxio products can and will muck with things and they have a "Patch" that will clean up after their products are removed.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Gloria,

Considering that both drives are giving you a problem, and assuming that they might be on the same cabling as master and slave, have you tried reconnecting or replacing the flat cable? You might also want to check power cable connections while inside the box. (Remember to power down the unit before venturing into the unit... but you knew that <img src=/S/electric.gif border=0 alt=electric width=15 height=15>)

    Re: CD-Roms Disappeared

Dave, it's been a long, long time since I had to use either drive. I can't begin to know what I did, didn't do or install or uninstall that could have caused the loss of the drivers.

Neither CD-Rom was bought yesterday and when I looked on HP's list of drivers for their drives, it was anywhere to be seen,. The other one is much older than the HP and I don't think drivers are available and I will have to use Windows default drivers for that one. Can you possible show or lead me to where I can get default drivers for the Samsung?

I could purchase another one to replace the Samsung if no drivers are available.Hardware is not my cup of tea.

    Gloria,
This is just one of many sites that offer drivers for the Samsung drive. SC148C

This happens to be from Dell but if you Google "Samsung SC-148C drivers" you will get multiple hits. When in doubt, Google it!
    Same with HP.

    Gloria,
It sounds like you may have the problem described in this KB article . Might be worth having a look and see if the solutions offered there will correct the issue.

    Re: CD-Roms Disappeared

They are on the same cable, as master & slave. The cables are connected snugly and every thing looks ok. As for power cables, if something was wrong, the drawers wouldn't open and the lights wouldn't come on.

Please tell me why no one will address the error message on the HP. "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality (Code 32). What ever that means.

Here are the listed drivers, may be a incorrect driver has been installed and that's what the above message is trying to say.

All drivers are in the C:Windows System32 folder:

    cdrom.sys
    imapi.sys
    PxHelp20.sys
    Redbook.sys
    storprop.dll

I can't run sfc because it always ask that I put the installation CD in the drive. What do I do now, this stuff is getting deeper and deeper and I'm about to drown.

I tried to remove PxHelp20.sys that didn't seem like a driver to me and got the message that it was a system file and the system might prove unstable if it was removed.

Hi Gloria. Take a look here for an explaination of the error codes.

    Code 32
<font color=red>A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)</font color=red>
    Recommended resolution

The start type for this driver is set to disabled in the registry. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard. If the driver is required, and if reinstalling or upgrading does not work, change the start type in the registry using Registry Editor.

    Re: CD-Roms Disappeared

Here's what Microsoft has to say about various error codes, including Code 32.

I would be tempted to use the device manager to uninstall the two CD units, reboot and see if Windows XP can find suitable drivers.

And then we have a search of the Internet using Google for PXhelp20.sys provides many hits with possible solutions.

As stated by other posters, there could be a conflict with your CD writer application if more than one package has been installed. Do you recall what software is installed? Obviously one would be the package that came with the HP.

Not sure if this will help...

    Re: CD-Roms Disappeared

Bob and all who've attempted to help me: I'm so sorry but I have made a drastic mistake. While I was away and had complained about my CD Player, my player was changed and I wasn't informed. I just discovered the correct name and model when I took it out to check the cables.

The correct drive is a Lite-On It CD-RW/ DVD ROM, Model: LH-52C1P187C, manufactured on June, 2007. I Googled that model number and found the firmware which was compressed. When it was opened a message said ERROR - No match drive detected. This utility is only for LITE-ON DVD C LH52C1P DRIVE. I copied the correct model from the bottom of the drive, so I don't understand why there was no match.

That's not all, Lite-On had an in-house email form which I filled it out and it said my message had been received. An hour ago it came back to me and it read - Not delivered to: serv.stat@liteonit.com because: User serv.stat (serv.stat@liteonit.com) not listed in Dominio Directory.

Why do I always have so much trouble doing the simplest things (don't bother to answer that)?

Again, I'm awfully sorry about my mistake, don't give up on helping me, I really need all of your brains put together on this one.

Thanks Rebel, none of quoted error messages apply in my case, but I have reached a point where I'm willing to try anything. I will digest the printed article and do as it says. I'll be sure to post back with a yes or no.

Be sure to read my post to Viking, I made a big boo bo.

    Re: CD-Roms Disappeared

    My Dear Doc,
I mentioned in a previous post that I wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. Now you will know I meant it.

Uninstalling the driver: When I tried before I got the message that if I did it might make Windows unstable, so I left it. How do I uninstall the driver (step-by-step) please. I assume it's done in Device Manager, but I want to be certain. I have no CD player to run the Windows XP Installation Disc and to run Scan Now if it does become unstable and with me it's a requirement.

I tried the Troubleshooting Wizard before I started this post. I tried looking for an updated driver, and none was available better than the current one installed. Going back to the previous driver also failed to work.

Now, if I can get the correct driver for the Lite-On, I may be in business for installing the new driver. But, first things first. I will uninstall my current drive when you send me the instructions. I do have in my possession the CD for installing the HP CD-Writer (Windows XP Compatabile), once I get one of the drives working again. In the meantime I will be looking for a new driver for the HP.

Thanks for everyones efforts to assist me.

    Gloria
