Not clearing temp internet files (5.5 SR2)

Strange behaviour in temporary internet file land.

I was trying to clean up some space on my HD to allow me to do a defrag, and I used a handy little program called DiskState to spot the major folders. Suprisingly, I found I had 34Mb in Temp Internet Files. I say surprisingly, because I had only just cleared it out using IE's Tools | Internet Options | Delete Files button.

So I had a look. Well, in place of the usual five or six oddly-named subdirectories under Content.IE5, I now have 20. And sure enough, some of them are full of stuff. Roughly 34Mb of it, I'd say.

I cleared out the internet files again. No joy. I cleared them out using AdSubtract (an excellent cookie & ad manager which sits as a proxy server on my system). Still no joy. (There isn't a smilie for "double bummer")

Anyway, to cut to the chase, why are they there, why won't they delete, and can I just delete the folders manually?

Help, please. Please help. HELP!

After reading your two posts, have you ever gone into Tools-Internet options-Advanced tab, under the Security heading:

"Empty temporary internet files when browser is closed"

?

Hi
They won't Delete because they're not files. They're metafiles.
I think you have to do it as previous poster suggests.

Amazing what jolly things Microsoft buries in the depths of the settings. No, I didn't know about it. Rest assured that it's well and truly selected now! Thanks.

Still doesn't clear out all of the files, though!

I don't know what OS you are running, but in Windows 2000:

Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disc Cleanup

though personally I haven't found it any more efficient that the manual steps you appear to have taken.

I checked my content.ie5 folder and found lots of http and gif documents and some cookies.
Anyway, I went to edit:select all:right clicked the selected area and clicked delete and they all disappeared.
By the way I use Adsubtract and the only cookies there were ones I chose to keep.
I'm using Win 98 .

When you hit the Delete Files button and the dialogue box comes up make sure that you check the box next to "Delete All Offline Content" - I've found that that clears up quite a lot of disk space.

I would suggest clearing the TIF from a DOS session, (not a DOS window, but shut down Windows to DOS). One can use a great utility from http://langa.com/cleanup_bat.htm
Just select the one appropriate to your system.
