USB Storage not appearing

Hi,
I have a USB Mass storage device, that when I attach to my vista machine, I hear the 'normal noise', but it is not auto-playing and when I go into My Computer, it is not there. Help!

What IS this mass storage device, a hard drive or something more far out? If it be a so-called standard USB hard drive it shouldn't need drivers but you might have to go to disk management to assign a drive letter to it. If it IS a device that came supplied with drivers, you often (usually) have to install the software while the device is NOT connected, frequently being required to reboot and THEN connect the device. What say ye, mate?

Hi Al,
It's just a standard USB stick (with all my life savings on it), no drivers, just plug in and go (normally). The light is on but nobody is at home!!

my machine is recognising it, because the 'safely remove hardware' icon appears in the system tray when I plug it in. I get the standard noise (at plug in), the light is on, but no autoplay, and no drive in my computer.

<< you might have to go to disk management to assign a drive letter to it. I've never had to do that before, I'm a vista newbie!! I thought that it is assigned the next available drive letter at plug in? Or maybe not?

Uh Oh, I think there's trouble in River City... You said the stick has data on it but the disk manager says it's NOT initialized and I see also that it doesn't have a drive letter. OK, right-click on the left end of that line and see if it will let you give it a drive letter, but NOT format the stick or anything like that! If you've got data on there, you ought to take that stick to another computer and try to read off the data. It may be a dead duck.

Re: USB Storage not appearing

Al,
I don't see any option to assign a drive letter.
Let me rewind slightly.... This morning, i used this on my other pc to copy files onto, which was fine, safely removed hardware which was also fine, plugged into new machine, nothing. Now neither machine is running the drive, although the device status on both reads as working properly.

What are we saying here, I've lost the lot? Or can dead ducks be revived? [smilies unavailable]
What would cause such a problem? Is there any way of salvage?

Re: USB Storage not appearing

If it "used to" but now "doesn't" it sure looks like the gremlins have taken a bite on that stick, Nathan! Let's wait until one or more Loungers with stick-experience checks this thread, for I've got none and don't know about the possibility of saving anything that's been on there. For all I know, they (sticks) may be modern day throw-aways. Hang on while we wait for someone else to check in here. There are free file recovery programs out there on the web but I don't know if they will work on a USB stick.

Thankyou Al for your assistance. I'm fearing the worst (I can hear Hans shouting BACKUP, BACKUP in the backround). Some (Many) of the files are only copies, so I live in hope that another lounger may offer a solution.

While we're waiting for another opinion, how about downloading this: PCinspector Data Recovery (if it doesn't come up in English, there's a selector in the upper right corner.)

You ought to be able to let this program see if it can "see" your stick without further damage, but you know I can't guarantee that. I HAVE used this program a number of times, without harm, so I trust it on MY experience. The only reason I'm nervous at all is that I don't trust those @#$%^& sticks from some reports I've seen. Just be careful.

Re: USB Storage not appearing

Hi Al,
My thought process:
I have now tried this on 4 different pc's and it does not register on any of them. If the data had been deleted / damaged / reformatted...... surely the drive would show up, but be empty? The 'dongle' itself looks in perfect condition and has not been physically damaged in any way. This leads me to think that it's maybe damaged internally (chip)?? If that is the case, could these data recovery tools even find the hardware, let alone read it?

Sounds like it has gotten the "Pocket Virus", which can physically damage the device. The act of carry these around in one's pocket, will tend to damaged them. Also just throwing them in one's case will also do it. But they will survive a trip through the clothes washer.
A good practice, is NEVER rely on a thumb drive to be your ONLY source of that important data.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: USB Storage not appearing

Other than bringing it home from the shop (12 or so months ago), it never travels more than a metre, shelf to pc and back again... It was working this morning, I'm at a loss as to what's gone wrong

Re: USB Storage Device not working

UPDATE: - A GENTLE shake has revealed an internal rattle. So maybe something is disconnected inside. Now is that a good sign or a bad sign??. I'm way too heavy handed to disect this thing myself, but maybe a hardware engineer could salvage something...... I live in hope!!!!

Re: USB Storage Device not working

To be honest Doc, as much as I greatly appreciate Al's link, I am a little reluctant. Maybe over cautious! I'm not convinced that the software would be able to access and read the device. Having online software access my personal files does not fill me with confidence either.

My latest thought is that there is a loose connection inside the 'stick'...... The computer is reading and accepting the USB, but there is no connection between the USB and the chip....... I'm no expert, so could be (and maybe am), completely wrong.

I am thinking of trying a repair shop, unless there are any other suggestions?
