    Daily archive problems

Like the person in <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=lounge&Number=25982&pag e=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post25982>this post</A>back in March, I have been having problems with archives being truncated at random in the middle of a posting. Sometimes it coincides with the appearance of a smilie, sometimes not. Although I've always had problems with non-closure of HTML tags (i.e. someone applies red formatting to their message and the red continues for the rest of the archive), this truncation emerged recently with no corresponding change in settings. I've always viewed the messages with Outlook 2000 on a W98 machine. Did anyone look into this and find a solution? I'd hate to abandon the dailies since it makes my review of so many board so much more convenient.

    Re: Daily archive problems

Next time you get one, tell me exactly which one it is and the exact spot it happens then I might be able to track it down.

    Re: Daily archive problems

The problem is still there, as I commented back in March.

Since I now depend on the dailies to see what's going on, I tend not to see very much.

I do save the archive in a text file; the text file is truncated, so it's not a problem of the "view" I get with Eudora.

    Re: Daily archive problems

I am still having the problem with Outlook 2000, so I changed my mail profile to plain text instead of HTML. (Outlook's HTML setting uses Western European (ISO), but WE (Windows) was no better.) Visually the archives are not as appealing, but all the info is there.

David, thanks. I'll try that and see what, as they say, tomorrow brings.

Here's a screen capture of a good example from the Windows 98 archive from Thursday.

Bart, I'm afraid we have reached my limit.

I guess the Registry could cause this problem, but how you check or fix it I do not know.

Hopefully someone else can guide you further.

    Re: Daily archive problems

Umm. I'm afraid I'm totally stumped. As you can see from the rest of the thread, these appear to be isolated cases. Other people with the same software are not having the problem...

The HTML digests use "Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" and the Text digests use "Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1". I noticed in my OE that it is possible to over-ride this by telling it to use a local preset default. Might you have this option checked and be using a weird default charset?

    Leif,

When you "View Source", is the missing text in there?

Ummm. I have no missing text - <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> - I just clipped the pic to show it had the same layout as the original post.

Anyway, source is attached - posting it within [ pre] tags makes it somewhat wide.

    Re: Daily archive problems

    Leif,

I did misread your clip- it happens when I scan instead of reading.

But what I was wondering about was- is there something in the HTML which might cause you to see something different from Keely. (Or perhaps Keely could view the HTML source to see what's happening?)

I've had some very strange and unpredictable results from HTML with missing quotes, tags, closing ">" or the like, which is why I was wondering about the "View Source and not just the text.

    Re: Daily archive problems

I have no idea where to find this charset setting, so if I've changed it to something weird, it was the gremlins. All I know is the Tools | Options | Mail Format | International Settings dialog, which shows that Western European (ISO) is my preferred encoding.

By the bye, I upgraded to Office XP on Friday before I left town for the weekend so I'll check the next set of archives to see if that alleviates the problem. I'm still waiting for the messages to come in, as my e-mail host's server is strangely sloooow tonight.

    Re: Daily archive problems

I don't know where it would be in Outlook - I've never used it.
Let us know how you fare with XP.
