Windows Update won't install (Home premium SP1)

Released an update today for Microsoft Works (KB 955428) classified as important that absolutely won't install on either of my two computers. I keep getting error code 8024002D. I've got WLOC so not installing it is not an option. Hiding it seems to have done the trick for the time being but I'm sure sooner or later WLOC will realize it and start beefing.

Two questions...has anybody had or heard of a similar problem with this update? Secondly, I never use Microsoft Works, which came preinstalled on both my machines, any problem with just uninstalling it or is it somehow tied into Vista? Thanks.

Re: Windows Update won't install (Home premium SP1)

According to this thread Error 8024002d the error code means the patch failed because the source files for the product being patched could not be found. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the full files to download. So, I recommend that you see MS08-044: Description of the security update for Microsoft Works 8: August 12, 2008 for information on contacting Microsoft for <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> support.

I had the same problem today. As I never use MS Works, I chose to uninstall it and the "problem" went away.

I know I'm going to regret this, but WLOC stands for... ?

    Cheers,

WLOC = Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft's security suite - see Windows Live OneCare - Home.

Thanks, Hans. I was burning up a few little gray cells trying to figure out what WLOC meant in the context of Windows Update.

    Cheers,

Sorry for not answering your second question. MS Works is installed by an OEM under an agreement with Microsoft. This is the same as many other vendors do with Firefox, the Yahoo toolbar, the Google desktop, and other programs that are preinstalled on PCs. It is not tied to Vista in any way. If you do not use it you may uninstall it without any consequences.

Re: Windows Update won't install (Home premium SP1)

I went ahead and uninstalled MS Works, I'm going to do the same on my wife's Dell.

I've had WLOC for about 16 months and have been quite happy with it except for the one nagging problem...it won't let you turn off automatic updating and it insists you install every update classified important and above. I don't know why they have opted to treat the user like a child, I'm going to think long and hard before renewing my subscription again.

    Thanks for your help.

Check out Security Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB955428)
Download and expand and then install. It will appear to have done nothing, but now you can run the Works 8 update.

I had the same problem and found the above link. The on use I have for Works is I do a lot of converting for people as some do not know how to use "Save As" and keep losing the file that they have saved. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
