Background images in Windows theme (XP + SP3)

I've recently installed the Walnut theme for Firefox and really like it. I'd love to be able to apply it to my whole desktop - ie. create a Windows theme that uses a background image for menus, the taskbar, scrollbars, etc. As far as I know, there's no way to do this. Can anyone prove me wrong?

If at first you do succeed, you've probably missed something.

I think it can be done, but it's not that straightforward. One site I came across mentioned hacking a dll as the code had not been signed by Microsoft.

But I may be wrong, and you may find something helpful or even inspirational at Belchfire.net.
