Generic Question re Styles (Word 2003 onwards)

Okay, can anyone tell me why, when you pull in an autotext entry that is saved in a particular style, and that style exists in the document it's being pulled into but in a slighly different format (eg blue text and no numbering instead of black text and numbered) it accepts most of the new style formatting, eg goes blue, but not all - ie it doesn't lose the numbering! On the other hand, if you then select it and click on the style concerned it takes on all the aspects, including removing the numbering?

Surely it should either accept all the new formatting, or ignore it completely? Is there any way to make it accept the new formatting properly from the start, because otherwise I'm going to have to go over it afterwards and reaffix the styles, which is extremely irritating!

On other occasions, I've had blue text that, on having a blue-text style affixed, *removes* the blue and goes back to black! I'm not talking about using macros here, just the basic styles window. I presume it's a toggle rather than an apply, but what makes it decide to that? And if I then click it again, it insists on staying black despite the style saying it should be blue! Arrrgghhh! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

Who invented this d*mn styles thing anyway?!!

Should I move this thread to the Word forum? It doesn't seem to be a specific VBA question...

OK, I've moved the thread from the VBA forum to the Word forum.

I do not use automatic numbering much, so I can't help you with its idiosyncrasies. You could try Ctrl+Q to quickly conform your inserted text to the paragraph style settings and see whether that clears the numbering.

Regarding the color change, there have been discussions in the past of strange interactions between direct formatting and the formatting in the style depending on how much of the relevant range had direct formatting. If a small portion of the range was directly formatted contrary to the underlying style, then you should not get the toggling effect. However, if a large portion of the text was contrary to its style, then you may see the reversal. I'm not sure of the logic behind that.
