    EXCEL relative hyperlink (2003)

I am working in Excel 2003. I have a column of hyperlinks that refer to pdf files at a remote location. I need these links to be relative , but after setting the 'hyperlink base' my simple navigation links that point to locations within the spreadsheet fail. This does not make sense to me. Even when I save the xls into the hyperlink base directory, clicking the navigation link opens the directory rather than navigating to the location in the sheet. What am I missing here?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

You've run into a nasty bug (or feature) of Excel: as soon as you set the Hyperlink Base property of a workbook, internal links are treated as if they're external.
So you'll have to choose: either use the Hyperlink Base and remove all your internal links, or remove the Hyperlink Base and keep the internal links.

You could delete the Hyperlink base and store the path of the external files in a cell, let's say Sheet1!A1, and use the HYPERLINK function for links to files in that path.

    =HYPERLINK(Sheet1!A1&"Test.pdf")

If the path changes, you only need to change the one cell.

Internal links will work as before.
