    Monitor goes black

I have a brand new (less than three months old) Dell Inspiron and the screen intermittently goes black with the message Auto Detect - entering powersave. I have it set to never go into Power Save. Dell's people in India, have, of course, given me the run around - downloaded updated drivers for Vista when I have XP, etc. The sent a technician yesterday who installed a refurbished video card but I continue to have the same problem. Mr. Dell has a good thing going - I buy a new computer and now he is slowly rebuilding it with refurbished parts! Today they are going to replace the motherboard. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Have you checked the cable between PC and monitor? What happens when you unplug the cable - do you get the same message?

    Re: Monitor goes black

    Hi Leif,

I have unplugged the cable several times and then replugged it. I have swapped out the monitor and had the same problem with the other monitor. I just finally got it to restart and got this error: ATI video bios poller client: ATI2evxx.exe: Application Error. The instruction at "0x7c911e58" referenced memory at (string of zeroes). The memory could not be read.

I had to manually turn the machine off twice and restart it twice to get it to actually boot up and even then I didn't get the windows music and it kept flashing that Auto Detect several times before it booted.

Did you download the latest driver from ATI - Drivers & Software or Dell? I'd suggest you get the most current from ATI.

I have downloaded the latest video driver - yes. A new video card was installed yesterday and the problem still persists.

I understand that you downloaded a video driver. From which site? Dell almost never has the latest video driver available.

From the Dell site. I have also updated the bios. Dell now wants to replace the motherboard and powersupply! I had to tell the tier three tech how to look at the event log for pity's sakes!

If Dell wants to replace the motherboard & powersupply, I'd let them. In the mean time, I'd suggest you get the latest drivers for your video card from ATI using the link in my prior post.
