Windows Updates (Windows XP Office 2007)

New computer will not let me install Windows XP and Office 2007 updates. I appears they are downloaded (I am assuming), but they will not install. There are a mixture for a total of 12. I set Microsoft updates site as trusted. I am running McAfee. Do I need to disable virus checker to get it to work? Would disconnecting my router temporarily help? Cannot find them in applications to install in Add/Remove Programs. Argh - any suggestions would be appreciated. Have never experienced this with previous computers. Thanks.

I you go to Windows Update site and let it scan for updates do the results say it has anything to apply? Do the results say it needs to download anything? Have you looked at How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues? Also, see Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Yep, I've already been to all those links. One thing I failed to mention (and probably an important item), is that when I click on the icon in the sys tray to update, and then click on Custom install, it lists about 19 different updates individually. That's what made me think that they were downloaded but not installed. There are check marks I could uncheck for specific items if need be. Haven't tried that, because I just wasn't brave enough to do that. With old machine they just installed with no problem and didn't have to deal with this. I did notice that Win XP SP1 was checked in avaiable to install, but SP3 is installed on this machine already. Thought that was odd. I've also changed settings in my options for IE security internet settings as suggested by MS which didn't work either.

I would try to install only one or two at a time here if possible. 19 all at once is not a good idea.
Try WINXP SP1 first.
That's the OS Service pack. ( SP3 is the IE Service Pack. )

Are you sure it is offering you XP SP-1 and not Office 2007 SP-1? It would be very strange for XP SP-1 to be offered if you have SP-3 installed.

When you check on the Custom install button does the results with the 19 updates come up immediately or does it do a scan? Also, there should be a summary at the top that shows the total number of updates and the number of MB to download. Windows Update always places the check marks on important fixes so you don't have to make any decisions about them. The only updates you need to select yourself are those in the Optional category.

Actually, the SP1 was for Office 2007 – my mistake. I was entering that post at work from memory. I have 22 to download. I unchecked all but the SP1 for Office and clicked install. Same message – cannot be installed. Odd though, that option went away in my install list, but does not show in Add/Remove programs under installed updates. I tried several other single options or a mixture of a couple. I got the same result – cannot be installed, but these items reappear in the list to install unlike the SP1 for office. Linking to MS to check for updates does not add additional options in my install list. Perplexing!!! Could it possibly be my virus checker (McAfee) or some type of firewall setting preventing this? This is an individual computer not connected to a network.

What is the exact text of the error message? Yes, your anti-virus could interfere. You could try disabling it during the update process.

I disabled all three features of McAfee (virus, spyware, firewall) and tried to install using the custom feature. When I viewed the install window it seems it tries (all flashes very quickly) and then I receive a notice at the top of the list that "some updates could not be installed". The list now contains 23 items (growing larger every day
