Wow, that sounds ( <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>) like quite an adventure; thanks for writing up and sharing the solution.

Just a few tiny proofreading remarks:

On page 1, under point 2:

Sound, Video an Gamer Controllers > Sound, Video and Game Controllers

    On page 2, after Caution:

    ie > i.e.

On page 3, under point 3b:

Ensure that the computer and the Windows XP has been fully loaded and is in idle state. > Ensure that Windows XP has been fully loaded and is in idle state.

    Soundblaster Uninstall Drivers and Applications

I recently have had considerable problem with upgrading from Onboard Sound to Creative Audigy then to X-Fi Extreem, to the extent that little of the integrated software worked, my bootup was a lottery as to what loaded in the notification area, I had sound on all speakers 5.1 except left rear.
Initally I received advice that the best option was to format and reinstall Windows XP.
Working together with Creative support, the attached method (Word 2003 format) was devised and worked perfectly.
Only thing that has not been done is another to proof read, if errors are found please advise.
