Firefox major upgrade 2.0.0.16 - 3.0.1

For those of you that are still using Firefox 2, Mozilla will soon be offering the option to use the built-in update system to upgrade to Firefox 3. The upgrade is due to be offered from 7pm PDT on August 25th and will give the option for Firefox 2.0.0.16 users to upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1

Firefox 3 is not compatible with Windows 98, 98 SE, ME or NT 4.0, or with Mac versions prior to OS X 10.4, so if you have any of those operating systems you will not be offered the upgrade.

Some things to be aware of:
When Firefox 3 is installed it will check your extensions and themes to see if they are compatible, if any are not it will offer to check for updates to them and disable them if updates are not found.
There are a couple of extensions that are quite widely used that Firefox will not find an update for, but there are versions available that are compatible with Firefox 3:

Tab Mix Plus - You can use the latest development version available from the Tab Mix Plus forum

Bookmark Backup - The latest version (0.4.10) is available from the author's home page[/list]If you upgrade to Firefox 3 and decide to go back to Firefox 2 for whatever reason it is not a straightforward process. When Firefox 3 is first run it will convert the profile folder (location when Firefox 3 stores user data) to a new format. Many of the user files used in Firefox 2 are no longer used in Firefox 3. I strongly recommend backing up your user information first, though you may never need it, it is always a good idea to keep a backup.

Finally, the next updates to Firefox (2.0.0.17 and 3.0.2) are due out on September 11th, date subject to change.

Thanks as always for the insights on the 9-11 (yuck, I hate that date!) updates, Tony.

The updates will no longer be released on 9-11, they have put the release back to the following week.

Re: Firefox major upgrade 2.0.0.16 - 3.0.1

Thanks for the heads up. I have automatic updates switched off and just did a manual check. Firefox tells me that around half of my extensions will be disabled if I install version 3. I suspect the list is suspect (it included British English Dictionary, for example) but reminded me that I when I trialled version 3 I found it more annoying than useful. I'll probably stick with version 2 for as long as I can. At the very least I would want to find a theme that I like that doesn't have the big back button (urg!).

Chris, if you're referring to the "big" back button in the default (standard?) theme, you can eliminate it by choosing "Use Small Icons" in View>Toolbars>Customize...

Cheers,

(Edited by Cah on 02-Sep-08 13:29. )
Thanks, yes I meant the big back button. I seem to remember I had a problem with the small icons view as well, but not sure what it was. Perhaps it was just that everything shrank. I think I need to find a theme similar to winestripe - basically the old 1.5 classic look.

Edited: And StrataStripe might be it. Though I don't like the idea of having to register to download it.

1.5?... Wow. Does that qualify you as a Luddite ?

Re: Firefox major upgrade 2.0.0.16 - 3.0.1

Support for Firefox 2 will continue until December.

I have updated the British English Dictionary so that it will install in Firefox 3, there was an error in the installation file. I have uploaded the file to Windows Live SkyDrive
It can not be installed direct from that page, to install it you have to download the file (british_english_dictionary-1.19-fx+zm+tb.xpi) and then use "File > Open File" and open the .xpi file which will install it.

Also if you trialled version 3 you may have problems when you finally upgrade if you did not use a different profile. Many of the files that Firefox 3 uses to store user data are different than those used in Firefox 2. When Firefox 3 is first run it will convert the Firefox 2 user files to the Firefox 3 format (the old files will not be removed). If you have used Firefox 3 in the past and try to upgrade to it again, it will use the Firefox 3 data files that existed from the time you trialled it before, so any changes you have made since then such ass new bookmarks will be lost. You can overcome this problem by removing the new files that were created, this will force Firefox 3 to re-create them based on the latest Firefox 2 versions of the files.
The new data files created in the profile folder are:

* content-prefs.sqlite
* places.sqlite
* downloads.sqlite
* cookies.sqlite
* permissions.sqlite
* formhistory.sqlite
* signons3.txt (if the profile folder does not contain a file called signons2.txt you can also remove key3.db)
* urlcalssifier3.txt
