    IDE & SATA

I've got a new Gigabyte m/b that I'm trying to get an existing SATA drive and a new older IDE drive to work on simultaneously. The board uses an AWARD BIOS.

The SATA drive is out of a dead system and was the boot drive with Win XP. The drive is tested and fine and when put by itself onto the new system with the Gigabyte board will boot into Safe Mode but not standard mode in the new computer.

I've installed a fresh copy of Win XP Home onto the IDE drive and it boots and runs fine....whether in the new system alone or with the IDE drive as well.

When the IDE drive is removed and the SATA drive is installed alone it will boot (as said above) into Safe Mode.

So, both drives are good and work in the new system when used as a boot drive.

When both are in at the same time though:

    1. The BIOS recognized both drives.
    2. The computer boots to the IDE drive with its new WinXP install.
    3. Windows assigns C: to the boot up IDE drive.
    4. Windows does not assign any letter to the SATA drive.

The SATA drive can be seen in DISK MANAGEMENT. However, when right clicked upon all the actions such as ASSIGN DRIVE LETTER and PROPERTIES are grayed out. As such I can't assign a drive letter and subsequently, it is not seen by Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions on where else to go on this?

    Thanks,
    BH

Make sure that you have the latest Wincows XP Service Pack installed.
I vaguely remember that XP SP2 or SP3 included support for a newer version of NTFS - I may be wrong but it can't do any harm.

Nope........no change. Although I will say that SP3 went in problem free which surprised me.

SATA drivers are not included in XP. You probably need to install them.
