Global Templates (2003 2007)

In the very near future my users and I are being upgraded from Office 2003 to 2007. We don't get a vote. Currently our automation (macros) are stored in "Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP", as "<TemplateName>.dot". I would dearly appreciate some guidance on the following points for Word 2003:

What is the default location for global templates in Word 2007?

I noticed reference to a "dotm" extension for templates containing macros. Will I need to rename the existing files?

The existing macros have procedures with code developed in Word 2003 back through 97, and even some Word Basic. Should I expect compatibility between this code and Word 2007?

Are there other areas with which I should be concerned?

Is there any recommended crash reading recommended prior to the upgrade being imposed? subsequent to?[/list]T.I.A.
    Regards
    Don

The default path for global templates is the same as for Word 2003.

Templates created in Word 2003 should mostly still work, but you'll have to test them, obviously. These older templates keep their .dot extension. Renaming them will not work: the .dotm extension is for templates containing macros that use the new XML-based file format. You could, of course, open a .dot template and save it as a .dotm template.

Others are better qualified to tell you about the pitfalls of migrating to Office 2007.

I have found that custom toolbars, and code which tries to create or manipulate toolbars, did not migrate completely smoothly. You might want to invest some time in adding your own section to the ribbon to improve the experience.
