    Alt key and Inverted Comma

I have recently had my computer upgraded and now my right hand ALT key doesn't do what it used to, that is access shortcuts, e.g. Alt F to open the File drop down menu. The left hand ALT key works just fine.

A second problem that has occurred since the upgrade is some keys will only return the symbol once either the spacebar or another key is pressed. The offending keys are the inverted comma key (upper and lower case), the tilde key (upper and lower case) and strangely the caret above the 6, but the 6 itself works.

Both of my problems happen in all software, not just Microsoft.

Can anyone please assist. Many thanks.

What was the upgrade ?? We will need to know what was done to "upgrade" the system before we can begin to troubleshoot the problem.

Sorry. My computer was close to dying so my partner bought a new laptop. Everything from his computer was transferred to the laptop, then my stuff was transferred onto his computer, which is now mine. Existing software was transferred we didn't buy anything new. Is that enough information?

Re: Alt key and Inverted Comma

When you say: "had my computer upgraded", can you be a bit more specific?
Was there a hardware upgrade (new keyboard, new mouse, any new piece of equipment)?
Or, was there a software upgrade (new operating system, new programs, etc.)?

Intellitype from Microsoft is one (of many) programs that will allow you to customize certain keys on a keyboard. But frankly, I don't believe Intellitype will allow the changes you've spoken of. What is the brand and model of your keyboard?

Without knowing more about your specific situation, I'd guess that your keyboard needs a special driver that somehow got hosed during the "upgrade". If so, you may be using a generic keyboard driver and a not-so-generic keyboard. Let us know a little more...

    Like the Ricky/Tricky.

As I replied to Dr Watson - my computer was close to dying so my partner bought a new laptop. Everything from his computer was transferred to the laptop, then my stuff was transferred onto his computer, which is now mine. Existing software was transferred we didn't buy anything new.

It's a Dell keyboard. When I thought it was just a nonworking key and plugged in another keyboard, that keyboard is also a Dell. I'll ferrett round in the old bits and pieces box and see if I can find another old keyboard. Gosh computer bits accumulate a bit like wire coathangers in a cupboard.

I assume when you say "my stuff" you are referring to your data and the existing software was the programs you had installed on your computer.

Is your "new" computer the same make/manufacturer as your computer that was dying ?? If not, it may have something to do with the keyboard drivers. Although I would think that the standard Windows driver would be OK, some of the Dell hardware is particular and wants it's own driver.

Sorry, I'm being super non technical. Yes "my stuff" was programmes and data. My computer was the same brand as Paul's - and yes, it is Dell. His was a newer model with more grunt. I should be asking why he always gets the new computers.

Re: Alt key and Inverted Comma

Maybe there is a third party program previously installed on your "new" computer that might have changed the hotkeys. If you're not sure about this then try going into device manager and uninstall the keyboard, reboot and let Windows find & reinstall the keyboard. The next option would be to go to the Dell Support site and download the drivers for your keyboard.

Doc Watson, that sounded a stunning idea, but it didn't work. I'll now try the Dell site.

    Thanks so much - Indigo

Have you asked Paul if he left any stray setting on the computer for Hotkeys ??

    Doc Watson

Unfortunately Paul is even more computer challenged than I am. I've just asked him has he ever set up any hot keys and he replied that Control S is about his limit of use. So no joy there.

Re: Alt key and Inverted Comma

I'm stumped. If you can get hold of another manufacturers keyboard and try that, if only to eliminate that as a possibility, I'll do a bit more research and see if I can come up with some other possibility.

Thanks so much for your help. Will borrow a keyboard and let you know if I have success.

I do appreciate your persistence in trying to sort the problem.
