    Re: IE8 Beta 2 released

    Tony:

I wanted to take a look at IE 8.

If I set a restore point prior to install, and then decide to revert back, will I be able to "get back to the starting point"?

Or do I need to image the drive first instead?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Re: IE8 Beta 2 released

It is possible to uninstall IE8 beta and revert to IE7 without creating a restore point. You will have the option in the Windows control panel's add-remove programs dialog to uninstall Internet Explorer 8. In Vista you will have to use the option to "View installed updates" in the task panel to uninstall IE8.

Uninstalling IE8 will take you back to IE7, and you will have to uninstall the IE8 Beta before installing IE8 final.

I also advise against using restore points, and see that option as a last resort for problem solving before reinstalling an operating system.

    Thanks for the help Tony...

Now I'm curious: Whay are you "against" restore points?

    Chuck,

    >>Or do I need to image the drive first instead?

It's ALWAYS the safest move to Image first. Even better than System Restore.
System Restore doesn't always set you completely back to square one ( the date you set the restore point or image ) Imaging WILL.

Another option is to use an installation monitoring program like Total Uninstall that will monitor an installation and if you are unhappy with the changes or just want to remove it and reset any changes the installation made to your system (immediately or at a later date).

I've never used it to monitor installation of Windows components and can't say how it would work for that though. And as Bob said, the best option is, of course, to make an image before you install anything.

Be absolutely sure that you've read Windows Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Release Notes AND that you understand the various caveats in the document.

FWIW, my impression from initial use is that this version is rendering much faster then IE7 for the sites that I've visited. Admittedly a small sample with no real measurements just 'feel'.

    Joe,
Sounds like too many issues and caveats from my way of thinking! <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>

Whatever floats your boat. I read it and thought just the opposite. So, I installed it at work & on the Vista PC at home that is my primary machine.

Yep. Even though I will usually go for the beta, I'll wait for the final release on this one.
