    Secunia

Hello all.... I was on the master's <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15> web site just now http://askwoody.com/ and he recommended having this freebie https://psi.secunia.com/ on ones computer so I thought it a good idea to heed his advice and when I ran it I got the report shown in the attachment. Being completely new to this software I would appreciate some instructions as to what to do with the results. Particularly the notes at the bottom of the report which applies to me so how do I disable the feature in question, & can the upgrades be actioned from within the "Secunia" program? Please point me forward. <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45> Regards

    Re: Secunia

Secunia has already disabled the display of hard-to-patch programs, so you don't have to change that setting.

Clicking the + to the left of an insecure program will display info about updates. But you can also do the following:

You can get the latest version of 7-Zip (4.57) from 7-Zip.

You can update QuickTime to the latest version (7.5) from the Update tab of the QuickTime control panel.

You can update Java to the latest version (version 6 update 7) in the Update tab of the Java control panel.
After that, you can remove all the older versions in the Add or Remove Programs control panel. (Note: close your browser when updating Java and removing older versions)

Hi Hans..... logging on to the 7 Zip site I discover that there are no less than 16 options to choose from, can you please enlighten me as to which tab I should click on. Thanks S Fox

    Re: Secunia

I used one of the top two links in the left column, probably the first one. Both are compatible with 32-bit Windows and both are a "stable" version rather than a beta.

Jefferson has already replied. You could have used the first link on the page that I referred to; your screenshot shows that you continued from that page to another one.

    Re: Secunia

I'm not sure I understand your question. 7-zip can be used to create compressed archives of files, or to open compressed archives of files. Unlike PKZip, WinZip, WinRAR, and Windows XP's own compressed folder feature, 7-zip supports a unique 7z format that I never use. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Secunia

Sorry. All this stuff about zipping & un-zipping is outside my remit as an absolute novice..... Thanks anyway...

    Re: Secunia

Thank you John..... had a look a the link you mentioned and appreciate the principle but don't think I will have a great need for it so don't think my old brain should be overburdened with all that extra information. I have a "D" drive @ 111 GB and a Seagate external drive of 160 GB so think that will suffice for what I need. Regards Dave.

    Re: Secunia

Hi loungers..... further to this thread, I just ran Secunia again & it exposed one fault to do with Quick time and the conundrum that it presents is that it says the only option is to delete the program yet below there is an option to install the update. Can someone shine a light on this paradox please?

    Re: Secunia

Apple - QuickTime is notorious on the Windows platform for having 'issues'. It has a history of security and other general bugs. Obviously the Secunia staff are amoung the group that thinks you should not have it on a Windows based system. Most people are not that extreme and just try to keep it up-to-date.

    Re: Secunia

Thank you Joe, it has hit the dust already & I shall stay well away from it henceforth. Many thanks for all you guys who render such invaluable assistance to folk like me who seem to hit a never ending succession of snags & hurdles. Really appreciate all the help this lounge provides. Sorry if this sounds patronizing but I can't say thanks enough. Dave.

Understood - you can only eat the elephant one bite at a time.

"zipping and unzipping" refers to compressing and decompressing files to save drive space and lower file transmission time. Zip comes from one of the earliest PC based file compression formats, PKZip ("PK" comes from it's programmer, the late Phil Katz). Before hard drives became cheap and capacity large, file compression was important; for a time in the PC world it was common to mount entire drives in automatically compressed format. For your further education, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_compression.

    Re: Secunia

Eventually you'll need to know a little. Fortunately Windows XP & Vista have built-in support for compressing and decompressing "zip" files. If you should download a zip file, double clicking it will open it, and from there you can save the contents. If someone should request a zip file from you, right click the file (or files) and select Send To | Compressed (zipped) Folder. Think of a zip file as a compressed container for files.

We should now get back to your original thread. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
