    Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

How can I load more than one documents at a time at startup with Word?

I tried just placing them I the command line of the shortcut, but that didn't seem to work.

    Is there another way?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

Select the documents that you want to open in Windows Explorer, using Click, Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click, Click and Drag, whatever suits your purpose.
Press Enter, and voilą, all selected documents will be opened in Word.

If you want to open the same set of documents each time you start Word, place them in Word's startup folder (on Vista, the default is C:Users<username>AppDataMicrosoftWordSTARTUP).

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

    Edit:

Also Hans, there seems to be a command-line length limit.

Number of characters? Is there a set amount?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    Hans:

I noticed the obvious lack of any way to create a shortcut so that it could be repeated...not every time (therefore not in the startup folder) but as needed.

    Not possible?

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

I'm using Word 2002 and if I create a shortcut with a target like the following:
    <code>
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Winword.exe" "C:MyDocsThis.doc" "C:MyDocsThat.doc"
    </code>
    Word opens both documents.

(Office10 is the folder in which Word 2002 is installed, for Word 2007 it would be Office12)

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

That's what I had done at first as well, and, at least that time, it didn't work.

Then I found in the Help that there's a "/t" switch, which using that, it did work.

I did however, need to substitute a drive letter, P:, because the total path was evidently too long.

So now I was able to create

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12WINWORD.EXE" /t "P:~ School Docs~ ClassesCM 220Unit 5CM220 Unit 5 Board Text.doc" "P:~ School Docs~ ClassesCM 220Unit 4Unit 4 ProjectUnit 4 Project.doc"

That's why, in the other e-mail, I asked about command-line length limits, because without the mapped P:, the same would have looked like

    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12WINWORD.EXE" /t "C:UsersCWBillowDocuments_School Docs~ ClassesCM 220Unit 5CM220 Unit 5 Board Text.doc" "C:UsersCWBillowDocuments~ School Docs~ ClassesCM 220Unit 4Unit 4 ProjectUnit 4 Project.doc"

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

The /t switch will treat the document following it as a template, i.e. a new document will be created from the existing document instead of opening the document. I hadn't interpreted your original question that way.

I had already started composing my previous reply before you posted your edit, so I hadn't seen it.

    Hans:

    Now I'm confused.

Below is what the Word help said:

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

I'm still using Word 2002. Apparently Microsoft has changed the meaning of the /t switch in Word 2007.
    Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

    No biggy Hans.

I'm a bit more concerned with the command-line length, for that certainly limits the options.

It would be nice if you could pick a folder and have it open anything in that folder.

    Regards,
    Chuck

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

As I mentioned in my first reply, you can select a bunch of documents in Windows Explorer and open them in one go.

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

    Hans:

I put shortcuts to two documents on the desktop (they are in "far apart" folders), highlighted them and hit return.

Word only opened the first one, not the second.

Re: Loading Multiple Documents (Word 2007)

That doesn't seem to work with shortcuts, only with the documents themselves.

You could put the documents in the same folder...

Could you open the documents via an AutoExec macro?
