Can't print from Thunderbird (Firefox 3)

    Hi all

On one of our computer's we are unable to preview and print email messages from Thunderbird.
The preview page comes up blank and the print command results in the error message "Printing failed when starting the document."

    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    Cheers
    Ken

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, nothing there helped.
We'll keep at it and post the solution when we find out whar's going on.

    Cheers

Re: Can't print from Thunderbird (Firefox 3)

A couple of questions please, Ken. When you say the print command results in that error, are you meaning from the empty print preview window? Have you tried to print an email without going to the preview command first? In the empty preview window, what does the "shrink" box say? I'm wondering if it has some accidental custom setting that TB can't handle.

I've looked everywhere in my TB settings AND options screens and can't see anything that rings any bells. I do notice that when I click the print preview command, there is a very quick and small window that flashes on for less than a second and I can't see what it says. I was trying to discover which DLL it might be trying to run that could possibly be corrupt, but I just can't get it - it's too fast. Is it possible that the TB user profile on this machine is in a "non-standard" location that TB is belching on?

I dunno; I can't think of anything else. Don't know if you want to try a re-install or not, or maybe a new profile.

Re: Can't print from Thunderbird (Firefox 3)

I just went back one more time to TB's Tools, Options, Advanced and clicked on the editor button (see attachment) so I could get to the TB " about:config " screen. While there I typed first "preview" in the filter bar and a few things came up that you should look at. Then I tried "print" as a separate effort and got a much longer list, most of which pertains to my HP printer. If you want to look around and need us to compare notes, let me know here and I'll make a clipshot of what mine says and post it here. (It won't let me select the whole list for Ctrl-C copying.)

Re: Can't print from Thunderbird (Firefox 3)

    Hi Al

The error message appears when we try to print, not preview. When trying to preview, the preview window comes up OK but the preview area is blank.

When trying to print, either with or without preview, the error message appears.

I'm don't know what you mean by "shrink" box. I don't see any command or button that would "shrink" anything.

The small window that flashes before the preview window appears displays two lines:
    "Title: title of email"
    "Progress: Preparing....."
This window displays longer if a message with complex content is being previewed.

    Cheers

The "about:config" lists, when filtered for both "preview" and "print", are the same as those displayed on a different computer on the network (except for the specific printer info as different printers are accessed from the two computers).

Misnomer on my part, Ken. It's the "Scale" function that I was talking about as attached.

I'm out of ideas, unless there something funky about the specific printer involved. Can you link that machine (and its Thunderbird) to one of the other printers so you could test that theory?

Re: Can't print from Thunderbird (Firefox 3)

We can preview and print to printers on both computers from other programs; just Thunderbird on the one computer is giving us problems, regardless of which network printer is selected.
TB ver 2.0.0.16 is installed on both computers.

    Maybe I'll try re-installing Thunderbird.

    Thanks for your help.

You also might want to try creating a new profile before going to the trouble of uninstall-reinstall. In case you've not done so before, from the RUN command, enter: thunderbird.exe -profilemanager. (see attached)
