Not east to read Al, due to the scrolling. Is there another format available?

    Re: Scot Finnie

I've tried everything I know and can't figure out how the hell to get the thing to quit the long lines. I need some advice from someone on how to save the file. I've tried NoteTab, Note Pad and Word Pad and they all end up the same way.

Hang in there while I figure this one out...

Try this Al. I copied the text into StripMail, used the Paragraph function and then copied and pasted it into Wordpad.

Not universal enough. Not everyone has or uses Word.

Windows users have WordPad, which can open .doc files (the pre-2007 Word format).

    Scot Finnie

I've been a reader and "follower" of Scot Finnie for at least ten years, maybe more, but 1998 is how far back my email file for his newsletter goes. I think I've just changed my opinion of his writings based on his latest email and I'm going to post a text file attachment here so Loungers can read what I received this morning. His email says (as I've noted in the attached file) "share it with others" so I don't think I'm compromising copyright stuff by doing so. The reason I do it at all is that I discovered when I checked his link back to his NEW web site that this information ("newsletter") is NOT published on his NEW site, so if you're not on his mailing list, you won't see this diatribe! ( Scotís Newsletter Blog )

Scot has been "off the air" for several months and he points out here that it was because his web host was compromised by the "bad guys" which, unfortunately, has happened a gazillion times to MANY people. I sometimes think the dirt bags outnumber the good guys 2-to-1. Anyway, what's disheartening to me is that Scot has decided to take a position that we should all "dump Windows" in favor of Mac or Linux! Now, I don't think that having an opinion or a favorite operating system is a bad thing or something you should be afraid to say. But to totally denegrate the Windows operating system is NOT, in my opinion, something that a professional writer should do.

I leave you to your own decisions, but I have unsubscribed from Scot's future newsletters.

    Re: Scot Finnie

Whoooeee, I didn't plan on this being a major adventure! Thanks to both Doc and Jerry. I've quit using the .TXT extension. It looks like either the .RTF or .DOC extension will open for most Loungers. I don't know what one must do to "wrap" a standard .TXT file so that it doesn't scroll, but I don't want to drag this thread any further into the ditch, so let's forget it.

My thrust here was to let you read what Scot Finnie has to say, NOT a text formatting tuturial. Thanks everyone!

I can't imagine that my missive would have been as even-tempered had I been through the same experience... Although he clearly doesn't like Vista, it doesn't strike me that he is advocating dumping XP (except for WGA-haters).

    Re: Scot Finnie

    Au contraire, sir.

This may sound extreme, but this is my feeling: If you're someone who is fighting Windows XP's anti-piracy scheme (WPA, WGA Validation, and WGA Notification), you should ask yourself whether it isn't time to consider switching to the Mac or Linux. Microsoft has made a decision to go after dead-beat Windows users, even if it comes at the expense of honest, paying customers. If you're incensed by that move, rid yourself of Windows and embrace another platform.

A tad extremist, in my book!

That's what I meant by my parenthetical regarding "WGA haters." Anyway, since I am not familiar with his previous writing, I may be underestimating how radical it seems to his regular audience. It just doesn't seem that striking to me compared with eWeek columnists or other corporate IT pundits.

In Notepad, can't you just select Word Wrap on the Format menu?
