Add/Remove Programs

I tried to execute a disc copy program, the program wouldn't execute. I was instructed to uninstall the program and then reinstall.

I got into the Control Panel, Add&Remove Programs and attempted to uninstall. I was prompted that I had to uninstall from
the programs disc. I inserted the disc and after 2 or 3 attempts the program was uninstalled.

When I tried to install the program again, it wouldn't install due to the fact that I had a newer version
already installed.

This newer version does not appear in the Add&Remove programs list.

It does, However show up in my Program Files folder and on my Start Menu, but it will not execute
and tells me to uninstall and install again from the disc. I do not have a disc for this program.
It must have downloaded from an upgrade a couple of years ago.

Can I just delete the folder from the Program Files?

Thanks,

Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Uninstalling a program sometimes leaves traces behind, both in the form of folders/files and of entries in the Windows Registry. You can usually delete these without problems.

But I'm confused about an apparent contradiction in your post: first you write

... I had to uninstall from the programs disc. I inserted the disc and ...

but later on, you write

I do not have a disc for this program

Am I missing something here?

In addition to Hans' question, please don't keep us in the DARK! What is the name of the program in question? It's hard to assist Loungers when they say "a program."

Re: Add/Remove Programs

The program that I tried to remove first was "Easy CD & DVD burning" by Roxio.
I had a disc for this program and was able to uninstall it.

When I then tried to re-install this program I was told that I had a later version on my computer
and it wouldn't let me install "Easy CD & DVD burning.

I then looked around and found that I in fact had a program called
"Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6" on my computer.
I do not have a disc for this program. The only way I think it could have been installed it via an upgrade.

It exists in my "ALL Programs list" and there is a folder in the Program Files folder.
It does not show in the ADD/REMOVE Programs list.

Re: Add/Remove Programs

Try the free utility Revo Uninstaller. It can remove leftover traces of uninstalled programs.

Re: Add/Remove Programs

If there is no trace of Roxio in Revo Uninstaller, I'd simply delete the Roxio folder in C:Program Files. I'd also search for Roxio in the Windows Registry and delete the entries that you find.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Hans, Sorry to take so long to get back to you.
I was side-tracked by other things more important than the problem we were working on.
Anyway, I was hesitant to fool with the registry since I am very unfamiliar with its workings.

I finally got through to someone at Roxio from tech support that understood the problem he
basically said the same as you to just delete out the folders and entries that applied to Roxio.

He directed me to a web site that had the complete set of instructions to do this
which made me a little more comfortable working with the registry.
For Windows XP:
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000086CR

I want to thank you again for your help.
As I said earlier I would have had this fixed sooner, but other things cropped up
that kept me from working on the problem.

Anyway it is fixed now and no longer a problem.
Thanks Again.

I don't know that program. But many in the Lounge recommend Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems. It does a good job and better yet is free.

If you are trying to remove a program that is already installed, Joe's suggestion is the way to go.

I prefer to be proactive when installing programs I am uncertain of, or, for that matter, any program I install, and use Total Uninstall as a buffer for all installations. It allows you to remove EVERYTHING that a new install drops on your system, reverse ALL changes and remove any files added after the installation.
