    coloring google pages (vista)

I don't know if this is the correct forum for this question, but does anyone know if it's possible to put a background color on a search page in Google? Those pages that are all white are very hard on my eyes. If I could make them darker (like a quick skin switch) it would be better. Thanks.

I don't know of any feature on GOOGLE that would let you change only their background color. Depending on your browser, you could override the colors of web sites and impose a color of your choosing, but that usually makes a mess of pages where you don't want the color to be messed with, such as The Lounge.

Thanks for responding. It's too bad, the screen gets very glarey. By the way, those are very nice pictures on your website. Thanks for sharing them. God bless you all.

I looked at the article on darkening the background, but, being computer illiterate, I don't know how to "bookmark the link" that he tells you to do. How do I bookmark his link?

Is it a reliable method to use?

It doesn't work at all for me in Internet Explorer 7 (on Windows XP). It does work in Firefox 3 but I can't get it saved as a bookmark for later reuse; this also goes for Google's new browser Chrome. So I'd say it's not really dependable.

    Re: coloring google pages (vista)

I don't know whether it is reliable, but here is a way to use it.

<UL><LI>Go the page on the link
<LI>Copy the code from one of the boxes labelled HTML code. The code begins with javascript, and make sure you copy to the end.
<LI>Add the page to your bookmarks / favourties. Same thing, depends on whether you use IE or Firefox. In IE go to Favourites...Add to Favourites
<LI> Then to to Organise Favourites / Bookmarks.
<LI>Find the Favourite/ Bookmark you just created. In IE, right click on it, and choose properties.
<LI> In the URL box, delete what is there, and paste in the code you copied earlier.
<LI> Then OK and Close[/list]The result of all that is that you have a favourite/bookmark that just runs that bit of javascript on the current page.
So navigate to Google, then go to Favourites/Bookmarks and scroll down to this new one, and the screen colours will be changed. this what I see.

    Re: coloring google pages (vista)

Thanks John, that did it in IE for me. Is there any way to get the blue links to be any more visible, they're pretty hard to read with a black background. I tried the blue background with the white print, but the links are still and blue and even harder to read. Thanks for spelling everything out for me.

It works but only on links from my Google homepage. It doesn't work on pages from my bookmarks or on links from the first page. Woe is me.

    Re: coloring google pages (vista)

I just found another option that you could try. (i am not using Vista, but I imagine something similar is possible)

In IE go to Tools...Internet Options
On the General Page, go to Colors, then remove the Tick from "Use windows colors", then you can choose a Background Color, and OK that.
Next go to the Accessibility and Tick "Ignore colors specified on websites".

When I do that Google, and everything else, comes up with a pale gray background.

but sometimes the color is important, and you won't see it.
    Regards
    John

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by peterg on 03-Sep-08 12:10. Added tidbit about desktop monitors.)</P>If it's a laptop computer there is usually a setting to reduce screen brightness to conserve battery power. This may vary by manufacturer and may be available in desktop computers as well. To come to think of it, any desktop monitors I have had have had a screen brightness dial just like that on a TV set. Here is a screen shot of a setting in my Vista control panel.
