    Google launches internet browser

... called <big>Chrome</big>, according to the BBC.

    Re: Google launches internet browser

I wish they had chosen to call it something other than Chrome, for those of us who already dabble in some customizing of Mozilla's Firefox via its Chrome. Example: Ask The Readers: Best Firefox userchrome.css Tweaks?

PS After I post, I'm gonna move this to the Browsers forum since we may be talking about the start of something big! <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15> (kinda like "street view")

Haven't seen any download links to Chrome but Google "says" it will release some later on today? <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17>

    Re: Google launches internet browser

I've just been using it for 20 minutes or so, so I haven't done any stress testing.

I like the minimalist design, leaving lots of room for the web page.
Pages seem to load pretty fast.
The way pages are rendered looks more like Firefox than Internet Explorer (Woody's Lounge is rendered differently in Firefox than in IE).

It looks like it might become a worthy competitor to Firefox and Internet Explorer.

There are nice features for developers:
"Inspect Element" - a treeview-like display of the source code, you can expand and collapse items, and the relevant part of the page is highlighted as you hold the mouse pointer over nodes of the tree.
"View Source" - opens in a separate tab, displays the HTML source color-coded.

    Re: Google launches internet browser

For a first beta, so far I am quite impressed with it.

It uses the KHTML layout engine (also used by Safari and Konqueror)
A simple little feature that I like is about:memory which allows you to check memory usage in each tab, can come in handy when testing.

It also has a private browsing mode, which they call incognito.

Seems a lot like IE8 beta 2. F12 opems a developer tools windows (not tab) with lots of cool tools. "View source" opens a new window (not tab) that is color coded HTML.

    Re: Google launches internet browser

Boy, this is gonna be fun! I'm on the bandwagon too and it really is FAST. I would ordinarily say how extraordinary that is, but from my experiences with Google, that may not be fitting. It is REALLY fast at rendering pages. I immediately miss the normal "command line" with stuff like View and so on. Well, at least I was able to quickly find an Options screen for some stuff.

Very interesting and tonite should be a fun time for many of us, huh?

    Hans,
Is this an optional install with the ability to switch back and forth to IE, without uninstall and reinstall?

    Re: Google launches internet browser

You can switch back and forth between Chrome and other browsers with no problem, you can also have them running at the same time. When installed Chrome does not make itself the default browser.

    Re: Google launches internet browser

I'm not sure what your question means, Bob, and Hans doesn't seem to be here right now. So, let me say that as I write, I have Firefox, IE and Google Chrome all running quite nicely with each other.

When I installed the Google product, it made me close Fx so it could import my bookmarks but now they all seem to run at the same time OK.
