You could try How to reset Internet Explorer 6 to its default settings (unlike IE7, IE6 doesn't have a single "reset" button).

IE 6 opens separate window and hangs (IE6 SP2)

(Edited by djmoore on 02-Sep-08 10:40. )
When I open up Internet Explorer, the homepage displays (the company's own homepage) - which is easily explained as it being in memory.
(The laptop DOES have access to the web, as I am able to ping outside webpages; the problem appears to be with Internet Explorer.)

But when I enter another web address - such as Yahoo.com - and either hit Enter or the Go button - it opens up another IE window for that browsing session, and then just sits there with a blank screen.
Not only that, but IE locks up (both windows) and I have to use Task Manager to close them - and they not only do not necessarily close the first time I try to close them using Task Manager, but after I close the first window, as I am closing the second window the first one sometimes opens again.

When I use a Favorite, nothing happens for maybe 20 seconds, and then the second window appears. But then they both lock up, same as when I type in the address.

If I let the windows stay open, they will start to swap back and forth as the active window - first the home page (all shades of red) and then the second, blank window, alternating.

If I only open IE and let the one window with the homepage sit there on its own, I cdan close that window the conventional way. Only when I try to go to another website do both windows then lock up.

I checked in Internet Options, and the option to "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" is checked, so that is not what's causing this to happen.

This is the same laptop where I reinstalled Windows using the Update Windows option last Friday, in case that opens up any leads.

Another bit of info - the user has Firefox installed - it appears to have been installed recently and possibly never even used (I wonder if the IE problem cropped up before now and she installed FF as a workaround), as when I opened it up it was still at "The Firefox Experience" page - but I am able to go to other webpages without any difficulty using Firefox - so clearly it is strictly an Internet Explorer issue. I cannot upgrade to IE 7 without the user's permission, which I will look into - in case that may solve the IE issue. But in the case that she prefers to stay with IE6, if anyone has any suggestions they are more than welcome.

Update: While Firefox does work, and I have made it the default browser on the machine, I apparently cannot access Windows Updates without Internet Explorer functioning properly. I have tried the link on the Start menu, as well as the link in Control Panel in the Automatic Updates section. Neither one is able to bring up the Windows Updates page. Is there a way to tweak Firefox (or Windows) to allow Windows Updates to be accessed via Firefox?

Re: IE 6 opens separate window and hangs (IE6 SP2)

That worked, to an extent, but I have a new problem.

Now that I made Firefox the default browser, Windows Updates will no longer run because it requires Internet Explorer. I tried UNchecking the option to make Firefox check to make sure it is the default browser, and I checked the same option in IE - but when I open up IE, or more specifically when I try to go to Windows Update, first a blank IE windows opens up, and then a Firefox windows opens up, where I get a message that I can only access Windows Updates with Internet Explorer.

Am I missing something obvious, or is IE, and therefore the laptop, hosed?

Have you specified IE as default browser in the Programs tab of Tools | Internet Options...?

What happens you start IE6, then type update.microsoft.com in the address bar and press Enter?

Strange, there must still be references to Firefox as default browser.
You could try uninstalling Firefox and removing all traces of it from the registry, then reinstall it and say No to all prompts to make it default.

(Edited by djmoore on 02-Sep-08 11:51. )
Yes, I unchecked Firefox as the default and also checked Internet Explorer as the default.

When I type update.microsoft.com in the address bar and hit Enter, nothing happens for several seconds, and then a Firefox window opens up with the usual message about having to use IE for Windows Updates.

I even rebooted after changing the default browser, just in case.

I just tried using Set Program Access and Defaults from Control Panel; in the Custom section, I selected Internet Explorer as the default browser and UNchecked Enable access to this program next to Firefox - yet the same thing happens! I click on Start...Windows Update; a blank IE window opens up and then a Firefox window opens up over that and tells me I have to use IE for Windows Updates.

(Edited by djmoore on 02-Sep-08 12:01. )
Would it be safe to go through the Registry and remove all references to Mozilla , as well as Firefox? Or is there anything else from Mozilla incorporated into Windows that I might mess up if I did that?

I uninstalled Firefox (have not gone through registry yet) and now when I click on Start...Windows Update, I get a popup window with the message "Application not found".

I will go through the registry now.

Re: IE 6 opens separate window and hangs (IE6 SP2)

OK, I've gone through the registry and removed any reference to Firefox. Then I rebooted.
Now when I go to Start ... Windows Update, I get the following:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

I looked in Folder Options, and the best I could come up with is associating htt* files with Internet Explorer. That did nothing. According to Windows Update properties, it is actually a .exe file - but I don't think the correct thing to do would be to associate all .exe files with Internet Explorer.

Apparently the settings on this machine have been thoroughly messed up.

Have you tried the system file checker (select Start | Run..., type
sfc /scannow
and press Enter)?

Have you tried going to update.microsoft.com from within Internet Explorer?

When I type the address directly into Internet Explorer, I get the same error message as above regarding file association.

I'm running the system file checker as I type this - it appears to be around 40% complete.

The system file checker completed and I rebooted.

I still get the same error message as before.

I just tried uninstalling/reinstalling Internet Explorer using the Add/Remove Windows Components option in Control Panel; No change.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas (except for a total reinstall, of course). I hope that someone else will have a bright suggestion.

Re: IE 6 opens separate window and hangs (IE6 SP2)

    Joe,
That may be what the problem is: Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, there is no http branch - the only one that even comes close is htt.

And when I tried to do the File Association fix before, I only saw htt listed as well, and no http - but not being familiar with that interface, I just assumed it was supposed to be that way and that it covered http as well as https.

So now that I have a registry entry (or more than one, I have no idea) missing - what can I do next?
