    Deleted contact (Outlook 2003)

    Dear Loungers,

Today was the second time that I had a contact open in Outlook, was editing it, and then clicked some keyboard combo that caused my record to close and disappear from my contacts. It may have been control + D, but I doubt it, since that combo requires me to select "yes" before deleting. Thus my first question is: does anyone know what I clicked?

My second question is: where does the deleted contact go? I tried looking in the recycle bin, but it's not there. How can I retrieve it?

    Regards,

    JMT

I'm not sure what you may have clicked. Sorry, buy your contact has gone to the big bit bucket in the sky. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> You can recover it from a backup of your PST file.

Pehaps it's filtered out of view? Check your View settings for filters such as the exclusion of one or more Categories (sorry, I no longer have 2k, so I'm not sure of the menu.)

Another possibility is that you could have moved it to another folder. You should be able to search all folders for contact items using the advanced features of the Advanced Find function (Ctrl-Shift-F). And search the root folder of the information store or PST - sometimes items are mistakenly moved there, and become invisible.

Is this a standalone machine, or on a network using Exchange?

I'm not sure what you mean by "recycle bin" -- the Windows recycle bin? The first place to look would be in Outlook's Deleted Items folder.

I do not know why the Contact is being deleted in the first place. I can only guess that you have inadvertantly deleted it. As to why it is not in the Deleted Items folder, do you have the Deleted Items set to emtpy automatically on Outlook exit?

Since you appear to be using Vista, have you tried recovering a PST from using the Previous Versions feature? In Windows Explorer navigate to the file, right click, select Properties, then Previous Versions. You'll get the opportunity to restore to a different location. If that does not work, don't you have a full backup of your system?

    Re: Deleted contact (Outlook 2003)

Jscher: it's in neither the Outlook Deleted Items folder nor in the Windows Recycle bin.

JohnBF: Are you referring to View/Arrange By/Current View? I have it set to "Phone list," if that makes any difference.

Joeperez: I make a backup of my Outlook Data File to my desktop, but it has not been very useful because any changes I make in Outlook Data File (e.g., deleting a contact) is reflected on the backup file. Do you know why this is happening and whether it is normal?
Also, I have two Outlook Data Files: one located in AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook and another located in AppDataRoamingMicrosoftOutlook. Is that normal? If not, which one should I delete?

    Regards,

    Re: Deleted contact (Outlook 2003)

I believe I inadvertently deleted them. I don't have Outlook set to automatically empty my Deleted Items box. But on a positive note, I am showing a test contact that I just deleted in the Deleted Items box.

I do have a full recovery of my system, but it's somewhat of a hassle to bring out the external hard drive and navegate for the Outlook PST. That's why I have been copying it to my desktop.

In Outlook 2003 menus, I'm referring to View | Arrange | Current View | Customize | Filter. You might try switching to Detailed Address Card View (provided it is not also filtered) to see if your missing Contacts appear.

BTW, you did not answer some of my other questions.
