Please Insert Disk Into Drive D error

Hoping someone can help. DVD burner on my Dell XPS 410 won't recognize that a DVD is in the tray. When I right click in explorer it gives me the error in the subject line.

Both of my disk drives are supposed to burn and have worked in the past. When I use the Roxio software on Drive E, it recognizes the DVD as a CD and give me an error message about retry, ignore....

I don't use either to play movies or anything. Tried disabling the device drivers, updating them... no avail.

    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

How old is the drive you are having the problem with ??? The problem may be that the drive is "beginning" to fail. It sounds like the laser that reads the DVDs has failed and thus will not recognize that a DVD is in the drive.

Your subject line indicates the drive letter is D, but your message states that Drive E recognizes a DVD as a CD. Are we talking about 2 different drives ?? Are both CD/DVD RW drives ???

Are you still under warranty? I guess this "could be" a pattern of two, since I also have a Dell (Dimension, not XPS) and within 6 months of getting it, I couldn't get a DVD to read in my combo CD/DVD burner drive. When I got Dell on the phone, he had me allow him to operate my machine remotely but couldn't tell anything. He then had me boot to the built-in Dell diagnostics and run something that tested the DVD drive's functionality. When it failed, Dell sent me a replacement drive the next day. FWIW.

(I've never re-visited those diagnostics, so I can't tell you what is inside there that he had me run.)
