Help w/ WORD 07 (07)

I have recently upgraded to Word 07 from Word 03 and am experiencing several issues.

In 03 in the “Open File” dialog box I could add and move folders to “my places” so that the folders I accessed most frequently would be easily visible. 07 does not seem to have this flexibility unless I am missing something.

In the “Insert File” dialog box, I can’t get anything to show in the preview pane and I rely on a quick view of a .txt or .doc file I want to use as boilerplate. I can find no reason why nothing shows up on the preview pane even though it is highlighted.

In 03 I used several data source files for mailmerge that showed table lines in them. When I open those same files (.doc) in 07 the lines disappear and I can’t seem to find a place to make them show.

Any help would be appreciated from you experts out there.

I can help you with the My Places bar. In the Open dialog box, locate and open the desired folder. Then right-click on the My Places bar and select Add "your folder's name". That's it. You've created your shortcut to the folder.

When you say "table lines," do you mean the light gray cell borders (table grid-lines) used to assist in layout but which do not print? This setting has moved to the "Table Tools > Layout" ribbon tab.

I add folders to the My Places bar by dragging them there (from the right side to the left side)

I suspect that previews are only available for files where you have chosen to save a thumbnail with the file - have a look at the File SaveAs screen for a checkbox with 'Save Thumbnail'

Thanks for your reply jhall. I hadn't tried that before, but it works - now if I could just get rid of the extreanous garbage that I don't use like "desktop" etc.

Thanks for your help - I found the right ribbon thingy to show the lines - I am not sure no menus is an improvement, but maybe I am just set in my ways.

Thanks Andrew, but I saved some with a thumbnail and it still doesn't preview - It suspect its some kind of dumb setting that I haven't stumbled across yet. Any other ideas?

This is still a document-by-document setting.

Go to Office Button > Prepare > Properties > Document Properties > Advanced Properties...

You'll get the same dialog you got so easily with File > Properties in previous versions of Word. On the summary tab, click Save preview picture.

Kim - Thanks for your help. I did what you suggested and still don't get a preview of the document - Do I have some setting wrong in Word Options or in the open file dialog box?

    Bob,

Word displays a preview image by default; I doubt you have changed something that should have been set.

So you checked the check box and then re-saved the document? Or was it already checked?

It was already checked, but I rechecked and resaved it and still get no preview. The preview pane is blank for all files regardless of their origin (.txt, .doc, .docx). It has me stymied

    Re: Help w/ WORD 07 (07)

Mine works. But, not too long ago when I used the INSERT|OBJECT|TEXT FROM A FILE feature in Word 2007 I could NOT get Word to insert the text. It just didn't do anything at all. So what I did was copied the word macro to my Normal.dot. See the attached for instructions (complete with pictures since they are worth a thousand words). It will only take a minute and is worth a try.

(Edited by jscher2000 on 07-Sep-08 14:56. Replaced image with reduced size version to avoid horizontal scrolling.)
Hi Bob,

Just one back-to-basics check. What view do you have on your insert file dialog? Here's a screen shot of mine. If you have it set to either icons or tiles, it won't display a preview -- needs to be on thumbnails.
