    Associated Programs (Home Premium)

When I was on a discussion board, there was a Word document I wanted to open. For some reason, in the way the board had saved the program, even though it was a doc program, Word wasn't one of the choices offered. So I had to "chase it down".

Is thee a way to modify the programs offered in the menu (screen below) so that I could add some "default programs"?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

I'm confused - was it a document or a program?
What was the extension the file was listed as having?

    Leif:

It is confusing. It's a Word document attached to a board post. If, when I want to open it, I slog through my file structure to get to word, and tell it "yeh, open it with this, it works fine -- it IS a doc file (or docx) after all.. I've got no idea why it shows that Wat at all.

That's why what I want to do is add Word to that list. I have these all the time, so it would be great to get it "more accessible."

Hmmm. Isn't it a matter of file associations? Is DOCX listed under File Types in Windows Explorer (assuming Vista is similar to XP to this extent).

    Re: Associated Programs (Home Premium)

    Leif, sure is.

And if I right-click "New..." docx is one of the types (Word Document), which, if I create it, opens fine with Word -- as the files(s) on the board do, except somehow the association isn't "connecting" until it's downloaded.

But, if I hunt down Word as the "Open With" it works fine as well.

So there's no way to put Word in as one of the choices, huh?

    Chuck

    Chuck,

What web browser are you using?

I suspect we will have to move this post to the "Other Browsers..." forum after you have answered, as I think this is a browser issue and nothing to do with Windows Vista.

Yep, I believe you're right Stuart. The first clue is in his graphic - Helper Application is a browser term, at least it is in Firefox.

    Stuart/Doc:

Good job! Yes, I am using Firefox at that site...it doesn't work with IE8 yet...

Is it a "user agent" that I use or need to make the site think I'm using IE7? Or, is there a way to "tell" IE8 about the association?

    Re: Associated Programs (Home Premium)

If you can open it you are obviously using 2007, and docx is an extension for which I have yet to find anything that will preview it. It just occurred to me that Outlook 2007 will presumably preview it, but outside Office 2007 and its associated file viewers, other programs can't see documents in that format. I don't have it (yet), but in all likelihood WordPerfect X4 has the capability.

    Chuck,

I have moved this post to the Other Browsers and email clients forum, as it is a Firefox issue, and not specific to Windows Vista.

    Chuck
Looking at the screen shot you provided, the file is being sent to you as "application/octect stream".
This is coming from the site and is incorrct for a Word document (doc or docx).

I suggest you contact the site support and ask them to correct the "mime type".
