    Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

I was able, through school, to buy the full Office 2007 Ultimate edition.

I am currently running 2007 Professional Trial.

Do I need to uninstall what I have before I install the Ultimate edition?

    Regards,

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

I'm not sure with Office 2007, but with Office 2003, MS recommended uninstalling the trial version prior to installing another version. (see here - last question)

edited to add: and this article confirms it (second last question).

    OK, thanks John.

I think I better back up the data, because I don't think MS tampers with that, better safe than sorry...

    Thanks,

It is ALWAYS best to uninstall any trial version before installing any Retail versions. You never know what has been added to the trial version.

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

OK, I uninstalled the 2007 Pro Trial, and then installed the 2007 Ultimate.

But the Help screen is still showing (About) that I have the Pro trial -- and yet I also installed the addition components of the Ultimate.

So now what? Do I have to uninstall again? If so, why didn't it work the first time? And will this affect the activation process of the Ultimate version?

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

    Whoever may be curious:

After 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft, I had to go back to a pre-Office image, and install the Office 2007 Ultimate to a "bare" setup.

Apparently Ultimate didn't like being installed over a Professional Trial setup.

In addition, I had copied the setup file (downloaded) to my hard drive, but running it from there, for some reason, always had some part of it running, where, after I copied the setup file to a DVD, it ran without incident.

Now I'll see if I can migrate the settings etc. from the old setup.

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

I note the discussion about upgrading from a trial version of Office Professional to Office Ultimate. My situation is slightly different. I have a registered copy of Office 2007 on my PC, and now have a copy of Office Ultimate.
Can I install Ultimate over the existing version and hope to find the Outlook pst file will be discovered? Is it better to uninstall the current version, install Ultimate and point Outlook to the backed up pst file? Guess I am feeling a tad lazy at the end of the year!
    Many thanks for your suggestions.

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

I've just upgraded a number of Office 2007 Pro installations to Office Ultimate. I chose to uninstall the Pro version and then install the Ultimate version. It worked just fine. No problems with Outlook finding anything. The biggest pain was applying SP-1 and all the patches since.

However, it can't hurt to have a good backup just in case.

Thanks, as always, Joe for your prompt and wise advice. Perhaps a task for the brief holiday break.

Did you put all .msp update files in Updates folder in your installation package? I did so, and I have no problems with updates since. After December'08 updates, there are 32 .msp files total (SP-1 Patch itself contains 7 .msp files - all numbers for English-US version).

No. I've got a WSUS server so the updates are distributed automatically. I just make sure they get applied before I let the user have the PC. The pain is just in the extra time to do the installation.

That's a handy suggestion, kaplinb. Where would I find the Updates folder on a Vista machine?
I have set my machine to see hidden files and folders, but no luck finding it so far.
    Thank you!

    Re: Office Upgrading (MSO 2007)

    Dianne,

It is not on your local Vista installation, it is on your Office Installation source. For instance, if you are installing from DVD, you can make your own custom DVD, adding .msp files in corresponding folder (see Updatesreadme.txt for more information.) You also can copy entire Installation DVD to a separate folder on your hard drive, add .msp files to C:{your folder}Updates and then install Office from your folder. You can delete installation folder later, if you prefer.

    Joe,

WSUS server ignores the updates already applied, so customizing installation source will speed up the whole process. If you have Office Volume License, you can also add your Installation Key and other necessary information by editing Ultimate.WWconfig.xml file. If you are installing Office 2007 on the regular basis, it makes sense to create your own custom installation source.
