extremely sloooow file transfer (xp home)

I have recently had a problem with extremely slow file transfers, both between computers (peer to peer) and from internal to external hard drive. Using the last as an example, if I want to copy four 3MB files from internal hard drive to an external usb hard drive, windows says it will take 57 minutes. Somewhere during the process I'll get an error message that there is insufficient free space. If I try to move just one of these files, I immediately get the 'not enough free space' message. The target drive has 300+GB free.

I disabled Norton Security and it did not make a difference. I am not aware of any changes to my configurations or new programs that would cause this problem. A scan of the hard drives but Norton doesn't disclose any malware, etc.

Any other suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Check the properties of the external drive and make sure they are set to "Optimize for best performance". They may have defaulted to "Optimise for quick removal". The latter means that computer is waiting for confirmation that each block of data has been received and written before sending the next one.

You might also check to be sure the drivers are up to date, but that seems unlikely in this situation.

Thanks! I changed to 'Optimize for best performance', but it didn't help, though.

One additional quirk to my system that I forgot to mention until it just happened. In windows explorer (WE), sometimes when I click on a drive or folder, there will be a 5-10 second pause as the screen goes white with just the screen header visible and then WE returns to original, pre-click screen and works normally from that point on. Other times, WE just disappears and I have to reload it. Sorry I forgot to mention that, as it is probably a symptom/cause of the problem.

Another thing tat slows thing down is the use of "Icons and Thumbnail". The use of Details of List will work faster, as the images do not need to be generated on the receiving side.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You might try registry fix #2 "Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000" at Kelly's Korner to see if that fixes the Windows Explorer issue. But create a System Restore point before you do, just in case you don't like the results.

thanks, but these didn't help either.

something else: I use Nero to burn DVDs of recorded mpg files. On one computer it takes about 1 minute to load a mpg file. On the computer with the problem, it's taking 10 to 20 minues to load a similar file. So perhaps the problem is deeper rooted than WE?

When was the last time you did any system maintenance on the problem PC ?? Things like clearing out the temporary files, browser cache, run the Disk Cleanup utility, defragged the hard drive, etc.

Are you running any anti-spyware/malware software to protect and clean your system ??? Do both computers run the same anti-virus program ??

You plenty of space of the external drive, BUT, how much empty space to you have on the System Drive?
