    Doc Compare Colors (2000/2002)

    From the Reviewing toolbar, Options, I see how to change the colors for the inserts but not the deletes. In fact the deletions are the same color choice as the inserts. Of course we would like a different color for deletes as for inserts. Help!

    Hi L.T.,

    In Word 2000 at least, I don't even see an option on the Reviewing toolbar for setting the colors for insertions or deletions.

    In any case, you should be able to change these colors by going to Tools > Track Changes > Highight Changes, click on Options.
    This will get you to a Track Changes dialog where you can set the colors for insertions and deletions.

    You can also access this same dialog via: Tools > Options > Track Changes.

    If you have different authors (with different author names) making tracked changes to the text, then you will not be able to alter the colors as in that case the colors are assigned automatically by Word.

    It appears that in Word 2002 there is no ability to modify settings for deletions. According to Microsoft, the code for this area of "track changes" was completely rewritten and they forgot to include the deletions. Word 2000, however, gives you control over both insertions and deletions.

    I don't even see a way to modify the deletions characteristics in VBA. This is painful to those of us who use change bars, as in FrameMaker you can have change bars appear without any other kind of markup. This was possible in Word 2000, but alas without the ability to set deletions to "none," you can't do it in Word 2002.

    Thanks for posting this info - that is a distressing situation though - I have some macros I use for controlling the characteristics of track change insertions and deletions, and if what you're reporting is correct, these won't work in Word 2002.

    Do you by any chance have a link to a KB article or something along those lines, that provides more info on this?

    Nice to hear a mention of FrameMaker - I was dragged kicking and screaming away from FrameMaker when my firm switched to Word. (of course, the difficulty of getting Word to do much of what was simple to do in FrameMaker has provided me with a nice franchise at work! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

    I think it's too early for a KB article, if they ever plan to write one at all. I just got my service call response from Microsoft two days ago.

    I'm still seething.

    If you don't mind testing it, does this code cause an error in 2002? Is it simply ineffective?

    With Options
    .DeletedTextColor = wdBlue
    .DeletedTextMark = wdDeletedTextMarkHidden
    End With

    Ineffective, I'm afraid. The text appears struck-out, as it did before. The .DeletedTextColor does allow me to change the color of the strike-outs, but not hide them.
